"A Conversation in Conservation" (2023)
In the summer of 2023, Dalicano had the opportunity to participate in the Paid Internship Program within the Conservation Division at the Los Angeles Zoo. This program was designed to support interns from underrepresented backgrounds in gaining hands-on experience in science, research, and conservation. Dalicano’s team, affectionately nicknamed “The Pollinator Princesses,” conducted background research, collected data, and analyzed pollinator species—focusing on invertebrates—and their interactions with both native and invasive plants. Their work helped inform the Zoo’s future conservation efforts as it moves forward with the Vision Plan and Conservation Strategic Plan. Throughout the summer, Dalicano documented her journey—from selecting study plants to identifying the pollinators observed—immersing herself in the educational and inspiring environment of the Zoo.

Part of what inspired Dalicano’s passion for wildlife was her experience as an animal care intern at the Los Angeles Zoo. She worked with two different “strings” — groups of animals under the care of a single zookeeper. Her first string was the World of Birds Show, home to a diverse collection of avian species including falcons, condors, eagles, parrots, and hornbills. In this role, keepers and animals interact directly with audiences to showcase unique adaptations and share important conservation stories.

The second string Dalicano worked on was the Koala string, which included koalas, western grey kangaroos, yellow-footed rock wallabies, tamar wallabies, short-beaked echidnas, rhinoceros hornbills, and occasionally southern hairy-nosed wombats and laughing kookaburras. During her time on this string, she witnessed a Species Survival Plan in action—an initiative designed to maintain healthy, genetically diverse, and demographically stable populations for the long-term future. Dalicano assisted in caring for a koala joey, watching his growth and emergence from his mother Maya’s pouch. She even had a say in his naming, voting in favor of the name “George.”

Pollinator Princesses In Their Element (2023)
Inspired by their research on pollinators, the team affectionately dubbed themselves “The Pollinator Princesses” throughout the summer—a name that also inspired this photo series. The interns took time to document themselves alongside their plants of interest and continued exploring their study environments.
