Each One Teach One is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of adults by improving their literacy skills. We provide FREE one-on-one and small-group tutoring to adults residing in San Antonio and neighboring cities in GED® preparation, English as a Second Language (ESL), and basic reading, writing, and math.
Our mission is to improve the literacy skills and economic mobility of Bexar County’s adult population through individualized curricula and one-on-one and small-group tutoring.
Our vision to enable functionally illiterate out-of-school teens and adults to reach their educational and personal goals and to strengthen those who are economically and socially disadvantaged.
"At EOTO, we help improve the literacy skills of adults who may struggle in traditional classroom settings by utilizing one-on-one and small-group learning models. In addition to providing tutoring in basic math and reading, we also offer tutoring in GED® preparation and English as a Second Language (ESL). Enrolled students also have access to various resources including digital literacy classes, resource fairs, and career counseling."

Gain insight into how nonprofits function by shadowing various members at Each One Teach One, including Chrissie Sorenson (Program Director), Valeri Aragon (Volunteer Outreach Coordinator and Literacy Instructor II), and Trisha Royster (Curriculum Specialist, Instructional Coach, and Literacy Instructor II).
Collaborate with Chrissie Sorenson to create curricula and programs designed to assist individuals recently released from prison. These programs are intended to reintegrate these individuals into society and help them become job-ready.
Work with Valeri Aragon to support outreach initiatives and promote Each One Teach One through social media, and collaborate with Trisha Royster to create and co-facilitate a training program for volunteer tutors to enhance the tutoring experience, aiming to improve GED readiness, graduation rates, and retention rates.
Reviewed and enhanced the "Aztec Life Skill Education Program" curriculum, identifying areas for improvement and making updates to ensure content relevance. I am currently reviewing curriculum with Chrissie Sorenson to develop new curricula aimed at assisting individuals recently released from prison, helping them reintegrate and become job-ready.
Assisted with outreach initiatives and promoted Each One Teach One San Antonio through social media. Created engaging graphics and content to increase the organization’s visibility and support its mission. Worked with Valeri Aragon to strengthen community connections and raise awareness of the organization’s programs.
Reviewed a training program for volunteer tutors with Trisha Royster, aimed at improving GED readiness, graduation rates, and retention. Although I did not co-facilitate any training sessions during this period, I intend to do so in the future. Continued to tutor GED students, applying skills and knowledge gained from the internship to enhance their learning experience. Managed time effectively to balance multiple responsibilities and address unexpected challenges.
During my summer 2024 internship at Each One Teach One San Antonio (EOTOSA), I focused on reviewing and enhancing the "Aztec Life Skill Education Program" curriculum. I made notes and suggestions for updates, identified areas for improvement, and ensured the content was up-to-date. Additionally, I assisted with social media efforts, created graphics for stakeholders, and continued tutoring GED students. My work aimed to break down barriers for marginalized individuals and help them redefine success.
One of the main challenges I faced was the limited time available, making it difficult to focus on a single task amidst busy schedules and unexpected daily tasks. To address this, I took notes in a Google Doc, shared it with my site supervisor, and managed assignments online and in person on Saturdays.
Despite the challenges, seeing the positive impact on students and contributing to the program’s development was incredibly rewarding. One memorable moment was when we found a student to help translate for individuals seeking housing assistance, highlighting the strength of our community and the meaningful contributions of our students.
One of my core goals is to redefine leadership by fostering environments where individuals can lead according to their true selves. During my internship, I suggested that our reentry programs emphasize students' strengths and potential, aligning with the principles of inclusive leadership that advocate for recognizing and celebrating the leadership qualities our students already possess.
My internship at EOTOSA allowed me to review and enhance the curriculum, assist with social media efforts, and tutor GED students. Despite the challenge of limited time, I made meaningful contributions and saw a positive impact on students. This experience strengthened my commitment to creating inclusive environments, deepened my understanding of leadership, and provided valuable insights into nonprofit work.
