The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student 6 growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The artifact that I chose for this Standard has been a test and World War II. I had created it for my eighth grade placement, and it served as a unit test for my students to take. I designed the test consisting of 15 matching 10 multiple-choice, and five short answer responses. The students had one. To take the test, and it covered all the material in the unit up into the end of World War II.
The assessment was used and examined results to “determine student performance levels, Identify learning targets, select appropriate research, based instructional strategies and implement instruction to enhance student learning.” (7J) I have been in charge of grading the assessment that I had created and from there I use the results to determine what information I needed to recover prior to going onto a new unit. The test allowed me to gauge student abilities and ensure that the material that we covered within the unit was understood without the utilization of notes and other assistant materials.
What I learned from this artifact is the importance of assessments for not only understanding students ability to comprehend material from a unit, but also it allowed me to really understand the areas in which students struggled in. This is something that I would like to carry-on into my own classroom as it allows me to view student progress in results from basic tests, taking ability, and allows me to really realize just what information students have to struggle with to better prepare me for my next unit.
The artifact that I chose for the standard had been a Schoology assessment on unit eight. You need to eat covered the 1950s and 60s. I Desus assessment within my high school placement through Schoology. The assessment was more of a outside of the box assessment where students had to select images that represented the 1950s and the 1960s , from there, they had been expected to explain, continuity, and change amongst the two decades, utilizing a caption for the photographs they had selected. I created this assessment with approval from my cooperating teacher. It had been my first time using Schoology as an assessment but after realizing how simple it was, it is definitely something that I will utilize in the future.
The importance of the artifact is to demonstrate “effective, uses of technology to conduct assessments, monitor performance and assess student progress.” (7O). Through Schoology, I was able to monitor students progress on the assessment, and ensure that they had been academically honest. Disable my first time using a School Jesus estimate, and I was extremely impressed with the technologies ability to hold students accountable, send direct messages, and monitor student progression. The use of technology to take an assessment with something that I had been weary about, but after seeing it implemented within my high school setting it sparked my interest and encourage me to continue. It was in my future.
A major take away from this artifact was its ability to succeed, even in a high school setting. I had been nervous that since the students have been taking the assessment on their device that there had been a potential for the student to be academically dishonest. But after seeing how the Schoology site organizes and structures, it’s assessments that fear went away. After seeing the implementation of this assessment, it definitely motivated me to look further into other sites and technologies for assessment taking. I believe it is a good break up from the traditional written paper test and it allows students to have a new sense of communication with the instructor while taking an assessment. This is something that I will definitely carry on into my classroom in someway, making sure that technology and assessments are implemented together for the overall benefit of the students and the benefit of me as the instructor.
