Students have engaged in research projects this year, including, an ecosystem project, phases of the moon, free chpice topic of their liking, and a saint report. Students were shown reputable websites to use to find their information, and shown how to use their findings to put into a writing piece about theit topic.
Students complete a monthly spiral review "math mystery" to ensure that their basic math skills stay fresh and these foundational skills stay strong all while learning new topics. Students work collaboratively to solve the case. (Spiral review includes multiplication facts to ensure fluency, measurements, area, perimeter, two and three digit addition and subtraction, regrouping, and fractions.
The following were completed after a habitats learning segment done in a kindergarten classroom while student teaching. These lessons gave the students insight on what a shelter is and what we need to survive as humans. They watched videos and viewed pictures of animals shelters and what they use to build them.
Students were asked what they need to survive. As part of the "Wilderness Challenge" they took place in, they were only allowed to take the clothes they had on, which you can see the student drew on the body. Students were asked to draw two objects they needed to survive.
After learning about shelters and seeing how other animals construct their homes, the students were asked to draw on a post-it two things they would use to make a shelter from the wildreness. They then drew a picture of what their shelter would look like using the two items they chose from nature.
The final day of the learning segment, the students were asked to construct a shelter from items from nature. They were told to make sure they had something covering heir head to protect themselves from rain. The popsicle sticks represented tree branches, brown paper was leaves, green paper was grass, the masking tape was vines, and pipe cleaners acted as rope.
The following projects were completed after reading a book about Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. After having a class discussion about being kind to others and how we can make people around us happy, the students completed the project below. The students were asked, "How can you be kind to others?" They then traced their responses.
Students learned about the lifecycle of butterflies while watching metamorphosis happen before their eyes. The students completed diagrams and learned about what happens at each step of the butterflies transformation. We tracked the growth of the caterpillars and discussed the differences we noticed each day.
