Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

A 2003 film starring Russel Crowe set during the French Wars. It shows the way naval warfare was conducted in the late 18th and early 19th century

Zulu

Although the Anglo-Zulu War does not feature on the specification, The 1964 film Zulu does show how the British army functioned.

Journey's End

Set in the trenches of France in 1918, Journey's End shows the experience of the officers of the British Army. Originally a play from 1928, a BBC version was made in 1988 and this 2017 version.

1917

Big budget film 1917 tells the story of two British soldiers attempting to deliver a message in order to call off a doomed attack.

They Shall Not Grow Old

Peter Jackson's groundbreaking documentary that used unseen footage from the First World War. Most of the footage has been colourised and transformed with modern production techniques. It's available on Prime Video for £7.99 and well worth it.

The Red Baron

A 2008 film with a biopic of Manfred von Richtofen, the German fighter ace from the First World War. Full film available here.
