Players should attend as much of tryouts as they can.
Tryouts are closed to parents/observers so athletes can focus on coaches' directions and participating in the drills.
Enter at door 16 of MHS. Players should try to arrive during "check-in" time to allow time for league housekeeping and organization tasks.
What should players bring?
Indoor athletic shoes
Knee pads
Hair ties or headbands
Hydration
Best attitude and effort
Should players come to all dates for tryouts?
Yes, if they are able. We are aware that there may be school and/or sport conflicts–they should attend as much of the tryout period as they can. When checking in please let us know if you will be leaving early or arriving late the next day.
Can parents observe tryouts?
Tryouts are closed to parents and observers. We have a large number of athletes and we need them to focus on the directions and feedback they will be getting from volunteers and evaluators. Parents can return after the tryout concludes.
What happens at tryouts?
At check-in, players will receive a tryout shirt with a number (players should wear this to the entire series of tryouts).
Players will try on and select the size of their jersey for fall.
Players will watch demos of skills, participate in drills related to passing, setting, hitting, and serving, and conclude with some scrimmaging drills (kings/queens)
Evaluators and observers will take notes on the players using their tryout shirt numbers.
How are teams formed? Will there be cuts?
Based on performance in skill and game-play drills, observers will take notes on players’ ability to perform the basic skills (passing, setting, serving, attacking) as well as their sportsmanship on and off the court.
After tryouts, evaluators will use their notes to group similarly-skilled players into teams. Consideration for positions (DS, setters, hitters, etc) may also be a part of team determination. Players and families will receive notification of their team placement and will have a week to register and commit to the fall league team. If players decline to play, coaches will consult the tryout notes to make decisions about moving players in order to complete team rosters.
Our goal is to offer as many teams as we are able to staff with coaches, as our mission is to grow the sport of volleyball in our community and develop future players for the Muskego High School volleyball program. We offer multiple teams at each grade level, but due to the constraints of team size, practice courts, and coaching, there may be cuts at some levels. Selectivity increases with grade level.
