So, at this point in time, my knowledge of the earth and it's processes are insanely limited. I know that we live on certain plates and that they are constantly moving around but that it close to the extent of my knowledge. I also know that California is known for having earthquakes and that is largely in part because of the San Andreas fault line and that is somehow connected to the plates. When it comes to the learning outcomes for this class, my knowledge is very limited in this aspect as well and I do not feel comfortable in the slightest in regards to all of the things here. I think the one thing I would most specifically like to focus on however is understanding map scale and location because that seems like it's more up my alley because I genuinely enjoy looking at maps and finding out where things are at and how far away they are.
My smart goals for the class, are to learn more about the geological maps, as well as try to find more time to focus on my school work outside of my personal life. As for what my expectation for this class is if it were graded, is to get an A. Obviously, I plan on busting my butt and doing as much as I can to get an A in the class, and learning the subject and getting that A is always going to be a goal of mine. However, I just need this class so I can get my transfer degree and get back down to Cal State San Bernardino, and if getting a C is all that I need to get me back down there, then so be it, I will take it.
So, now at this mid-term reflection I have to question where I am at on this goal, and what goals I have now going forward. So, for the goal I set for myself at the beginning of the semester, we haven't even touched on geological maps yet, so thats something that I still have to work on, as for everything else, I feel like I am handling it really well. I have been busting my butt and I have stayed on top of everything in the class and I feel like I have pushed myself past the point that most other students are at and that feels good.
Going forward, I would say my next major goal that I need to accomplish is going to be learning the rocks. I felt like I learned the minerals with relative ease but I have a feeling the rocks are going to be a whole different type of challege that I am ready to take on.
When it comes to methods that I to succeed in the class, I would say that the biggest thing I can do is just try and find time for everything. Studying is and always has been a key to my success in school as I am sure it is everyone elses, so, I need to make sure I am taking time outside of school to study and really start to understand the material. Another thing that I need to do, is to make sure that I stay on top of everything. Since I returned to college back in fall of 2021, I have noticed that staying on top of everything and getting it done as quickly as possible has been a major factor in my success, if I wait and take lots of breaks i'm going to fall behind, so it is imperative that I stay on top of my game. As for the SLO's, and assessing my growth in the class, I think the biggest thing is using this Eportfolio to my advantage, I feel like if I am staying on top of it and doing plenty of research I will be able to see how far I have come and how much I have learned. Going into this sememster, I am very nervous about this whole ungrading aspect, I feel like to succeed, in my own personal life, I need a lot of structure and I need a lot of deadlines that are set in stone to help me stay focused and determined, but this is something that I will have to work on.
So, above is what I said during my initial reflection. I feel like I have not strayed very far from the methods I thought would work for me. I have been on top of everything and it has been a huge factor in my success in this class. When I get an assignment that is incomplete I immediately figure it out in class and get it returned in instead of waitying until I get home and being lazy with it. As for how often I am present in this class, I am here every single class and I haven't missed one yet, I make sure to ask lots of questions as well as answer as many as I can to ensure that it stays in my brain. Outside of class i would say I would say I spend maybe 8 hours a week on this class and that includes watching the lectures and reading the textbook as well as working on my e-portfolio. I also feel like I have made significant progress, considering I just finished my minerals at the time of writing this and my e portfolio is more than up to date and is even ahead. I would say the most practice I have had in this class is learning not to procrastinate. I have stayed on top of things and that is a very useful skill to have in the real world and many careers. I think my methods have worked so far, and I do not plan to change anything, if it isn't broke, don't fix it.
I would say that my strength in this class is in the plate tectonics. If you look back at my first SLO, I was able to provide so much detailed information and learn so much about the tectonic plates and their processes. When it comes to my weaknesses, I would say that my biggest one would be trying to learn all of the rocks, they have been a huge thorn in my side at this point in time. If I had to say what my letter grade would be in this class, I would say at least a B. But I think I may have earned an A up to this point thanks to all the hard work and effort that I have put in.
