Second Week: Learning and Growing in the Philippines Classroom
Starting My Observation Experience
In the Attic
With Our Filipino Friends
My first observation day started early, 6:20 AM, with a Jeepney ride to SLU-BEdS. I even learned how to pay the fare, saying bayat po like a local. We stashed our bags in the attic – the pre-service teacher office for SLU-STELA students – which was cool because I got to see so many friends from different backgrounds. I was really excited to start observing and see how schools are run here in the Philippines.
I observed five different 12th-grade STEM classes (A, B, F, E, and D), accompanied by my buddy and cooperating teacher. It was a long day, although tiring, the experience was enjoyable. I took detailed notes and learned valuable lessons about how teachers open classes, communicate with students, manage the classroom, and deliver learning materials.
