Examine the history of mass communication in the United States and correlate it to the role of economics, technology, and social institutions (i.e. the government, the courts, and education) in its development and current forms.
Analyze common media forms and their impact on society as technological forms, social institutions, and cultural modes.
Explain the ways in which social institutions shape the media through an analysis of reading and the writing of critical papers.
Identify differences in mass communication approaches across cultures and social institutions and analyze the factors that contribute to such differences.
Analyze and critique the impact of media law and the ways it addresses ethical dilemmas arising in mass media.
Understand and apply methods for conducting research on mass media.
Write a 1,700-2,000-word research paper (or complete an equivalent project) that focuses on a relevant issue related to the free speech/expression clause of the First Amendment and analyze its impact on society today.
