This course provides a survey of mass communication and the interrelationships of media with society, including history, structure, and trends. Discussion focuses on analysis of the impact of the media on society and culture as well as on ways that social institutions shape the media. Problems and issues are examined in light of social constructs, economics, technology, law and ethics, and social issues, including gender and cultural diversity. This course is designed for transfer students in the social sciences, for journalism majors, and any student interested in how society and mass media are interrelated.
We live in a world where we are being constantly bombarded with media messages. But how are these messages constructed? Analyzing how the industries, practices, and content of mass media — which include radio, TV, film, newspapers, magazines, books, popular music, digital gaming, the internet, and social media — shape our perspectives of the world around us is critical toward becoming media literate. You will never view media the same again!
