"Nine ships blasted off from Moon Base. Once in space, eight of them formed a globe around the smallest. They held this formation all the way to Earth.
"The small ship displayed the insignia of an admiral-yet there was no living thing of any sort in her. She was not even a passenger ship, but a drone, a robot ship intended for radioactive cargo. This trip she carried nothing but a lead coffin and a Geiger counter that was never quiet."
For this project our group was tasked with creating assets for an adaptation of the sci-fi short story "The Long Watch" by Robert A. Heinlein.
The element of the story that I chose to design was the nuclear warheads that main character disassembles and renders useless, consequently saving the world.
The intent of my final design was to create a warhead that would represent the lethality of the bomb but also the performative nature of the military represented in the story. The core of the warhead evokes a display case, presenting the fission material at its center like a prized item.
The Atom bombs are the pinnacle of this Militaries technology. Their designs are the culmination of lethality in design and status. Their destructive capability is reflected on those who wield them and thus their design is intertwined with the functional and the aesthetic.
This was a group project undertaken by Louisa, Anna, Piper and Josh and was a collaboration between concept design and industrial design students.
