This German II midterm exam was created for the course FLT808: Assessment in Foreign Language Teaching, and was designed with a focus on maximizing and balancing authenticity, practicality, validity, and reliability. It is intended to serve as both a formative diagnostic test and mid-course summative achievement test targeting the Novice High proficiency level on the ACTFL Proficiency Scale in the interpretive and interpersonal communicative modes.
This report provides detailed information about and rationale for the assessment found below, including:
the purpose, target population, and impact of the exam
the objectives, skills and content assessed by the exam
the task/item types, response formats, scoring/rating tools, and reporting/feedback protocols
administration parameters, including time, proctors, conditions, and resources
This rubric, to be used in two of the sections of the exam, was adapted from the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines (2012), ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners (2012), a performance assessment rubric from Jefferson County Public Schools (2011), and an interpersonal speaking rubric from the Ohio Department of Education (2018). This analytic rubric will measure language function, text type and vocabulary, comprehensibility, communication strategies, and task completion. A general performance level will be determined and converted into a grade.
