About

I am a Senior Lecturer in English Linguistics in the Department of English at Dalarna University. Before coming to Dalarna University in 2021, I taught in the Department of Linguistics at Ohio University for a decade. I received my PhD in Applied Linguistics from Georgia State University (2011) and MA in English (concentration in TESOL) from San Francisco State University (2005).

As an applied linguist, my research and teaching interests include English for Specific/Academic Purposes (ESP/EAP), academic writing, genre studies, classroom discourse studies, applied corpus linguistics, and teacher education. I am also interested in issues of learner and teacher identities. From 2013 to 2018, I compiled and created a large corpus of assessed ESL student writing and teacher electronic written feedback (e-feedback) from first-year writing courses in the US called the Corpus of Ohio Learner and Teacher English (COLTE). Based on this corpus, we have conducted (and continue to conduct) several studies looking at various rhetorical, linguistic, and interpersonal aspects of assessed ESL students' writing in first-year composition, features of teacher e-feedback, and the relationship between teacher e-feedback and student writing development. Recently, I have been compiling and creating a large corpus of engineering master's theses, PhD dissertations, and published research articles.

I have contributed chapters to edited volumes, and my studies have been published in leading journals in applied linguistics such as English for Specific Purposes, Journal of English for Academic Purposes, Journal of Second Language Writing, System, TESL Canada Journal, and TESOL Journal, among others. I have co-authored Exploring Spoken English Learner Language Using Corpora: Learner Talk (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017) with Drs. Eric Friginal, Brittany Polat, and Audrey Roberson. I am currently working on a textbook tentatively titled Using Corpora in TESOL (Edinburgh University Press) with Drs. Jack Hardy and Eric Friginal.

I serve as an associate editor of the international journal English for Specific Purposes (2023-2026), and I am an editorial board member of the international journals Applied Corpus Linguistics, and Journal of English for Academic Purposes. I also review manuscripts for a number of other international journals, including Classroom Discourse, Corpus Linguistics & Linguistic Theory, Journal of English for Research Publication Purposes, Journal of Pragmatics, Journal of Second Language Writing, System, and TESOL Quarterly.
