Capstone- Hope's Haven
Project Design Philosophy and Mission Statement:
The design philosophy for this project is to create a space that will positively affect the residents who utilize the space. This project will focus solely on creating a design for autistic adults who fall within the level 2 and 3 of the autism spectrum.
Hope Haven’s Mission Statement:
“Hope’s Haven created an entire world with the understanding of how unique and special every autistic individual is. Our mission is to create a place where every autistic adult can flourish and live uniquely and happily”
Programming
The intentions and goals of this project are to create an affordable autistic living community that provides the residents with the ability to live fulfilling and enriching lives. This community’s goal is to create a space where autistic individuals can live or go during the day to help these individuals with therapies, education, and doctor oversight.
Research Conducted During Programing Phase
This is a 84 paged programming document that was created during the first semester of capstone. This document covers project description, inspiration, goals and objectives, codes, equipment lists, programmatic concepts, building and conditions report, exterior building conditions, neighborhood contexts, interior building conditions, short program, and long program.
Schematic Design
The direction behind this design was to create a living facility that created a form of independence for it's residents. Hope's Haven is a 2 story living facility that is broken into 2 wings on each floor with a central core in between.
The central core houses rooms that non-caretaker staff would utilize and it also houses 2 exam rooms and a doctor's office so that the on site doctor and nurses have a private and sterilized environment for resident care. There is also an indoor gym and a family room along with other smaller common area spaces within this area.
An addition in the back portion of the building on the first level will be utilized as the adult day program for individuals who utilize the building and separate staff during the day, but do not stay in the facility all of the time.
Concept
Hope’s Haven is renovating a school in Madison Wisconsin to create a skilled living facility and an adult day program for autistic adults. This community is located closely to the Ice Age Trail, and the community encourages green spaces. The chosen aesthetics will create an overall timeless transitional design. Each village within the facility will have their own unique take on the overall color scheme producing a uniquely sophisticated design that will help the residents utilize the space. The transitional aesthetic will connect back to the community itself and also create a welcoming, calming, and safe environment.
Design Solution
Each Wing is a pod that houses 3 villages and has a horseshoe shaped circulation. Every wing is color coordinated uniquely through the use of fabrics and materials to help the residents with wayfinding and creating an aspect of independence. Harmony is created throughout the design with the repetition of furniture styles, flooring patterns, and light fixtures.
All of the fabrics and materials were selected specifically for autistic individuals. All of the furniture frames and fabrics are durable enough to have longevity in a high stress environment. Calming colors and easy to interpret patterns were specified with the residents in mind to encourage interaction and warmth in the spaces.
The pods and the adult day program all have class rooms, activity spaces, lounges, dining rooms, nurses touchdowns and medicine rooms. Cooldown rooms where also designed into any space residents would be for long periods of time.
