Capstone Internship

Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health – Recruitment Intern

January 2022 – May 2022

The Fairbanks School of Public Health works to create a healthier state by improving strategies to prevent illness, disability and injury, and by improving how health care services are delivered. In my role as a recruitment intern I am responsible for recruiting employers from healthcare organizations in Indianapolis to host IUPUI students as interns.

Primary Responsibilities

As a recruitment intern I have been able to reach out to healthcare organizations in the Indianapolis area, to create potential partnerships between employers within these organizations and the Fairbanks School of Public Health. I also have the ability to create internship opportunities for Health Services Management majors, and use a mutual selection process to match students to an internship with a healthcare organization. Additionally, I am able to demonstrate my ability to meet deadlines, while working efficiently in an in-person and remote setting. This internship has taught me the importance of networking, and how to communicate and develop professional relationships efficiently.

Learning Objectives

At the beginning of my internship, I hoped to gain communication and professional interpersonal relationship skills, despite working mostly individually. I also hoped to determine my professional fit with recruitment in healthcare. Throughout my internship experience I was able to accomplish these objectives as I work on various recruitment projects, network with healthcare employers, and have since improved my understanding on the recruitment process in a healthcare setting.

Personal Development

I improved my verbal and written communication skills throughout my internship experience, as I had opportunities to communicate with healthcare employers. While most of my projects were individualized, my supervisor met with me weekly to discuss upcoming deadlines and progress that I had made.

I also had the opportunity to improve my multitasking skills through this internship experience. My main responsibility was connecting with numerous employers in different organizations during the same time frame. I was also responsible for collecting and managing data sets on multiple Excel sheets at once.

As I prepare for a full-time career, I would like to focus on improving my ability to work in teams. During this internship experience, I worked mostly in a remote setting and did not get to meet with many individuals in-person. I believe that working in-person with team members is beneficial to the success of a project, because collaboration is more accessible and there is less room for miscommunication.

Academic Connections

Previous coursework in 'Leadership in Health Management: Dispute Resolution and Difficult Conversations', 'Professionalism in the Healthcare Workplace', and 'Organizational Behavior and Human Resources for Healthcare' courses helped me feel more prepared for this internship. These courses helped me to gain a better understanding of several concepts of the professional communication skills that go into recruitment in healthcare. While these courses were beneficial, I would have felt even more prepared for this internship if a healthcare recruitment specific course was offered through the Health Services Management program.
