In the webinar, “Inclusive Technology: Breaking Barriers and Empowering Learners”, the three presenters based their conversation on the CITES Framework. This framework is evidence-based and was created with sustainability in mind. This framework focuses on three categories of tools for learning: 1. Accessible Educational Materials, 2. Accessible Technologies, and 3. Assistive Technologies. The discussion led to the development of IEPs and 504s and how important technology is to assist students with needs. They also discussed the Framework Areas with Family Engagement (Leadership, Infrastructure, Teaching, Learning, and Assessment). They discussed the importance of choosing technology to benefit all students within the school district. Their view was that technology is for all learners and that having students with disabilities within classrooms utilizing technologies it becomes common place, therefore creating community. In my classroom I want to ensure the assistive technology is appropriately selected for my students through engagement with the student and their families. We can only know if the technology is beneficial by having those using it every day as part of the conversation.
Another major topic during this webinar was to be an advocate for students with disabilities within the school and school district. It is important to ensure all students have all the necessary tools to benefit their educational journey, including assistive technology. If a school does not currently have the resources to fulfill the needs of the students, it is detrimental to have teachers and administrators advocating on behalf of the students to receive these new and helpful technologies. When I become a special education teacher, I want to ensure all of my students have access to tools and technologies that will best enhance their learning. I want to create equal opportunity for learning within my classroom with the help of educational and assistive technologies. It is important to me that all of my students feel respected and included and that will start with me advocating for my students and their needs.
