This was neither Brahms' first nor earliest work, but he considered it to be the best. When he was urged by Schumann to publish works through Breitkopf & Härtel his comment to a friend was "..when you show yourself people should see your forehead first." (Source: Peter Lathan: Brahms - J.M.Dent & Sons Ltd. 1948). This was also one of the works he played when first visiting Schumann in September 1853. Schumann referred to it as "a veiled symphony".
