The world we see with our naked eyes is only a small part of the truth, but what happens in the microcosm can really affect our lives. Microbes are the earliest life forms on Earth. They seem to have no consciousness of their own, but they never stopped transforming the world. Sometimes they deserve a bad reputation, and sometimes they're lovely and helpful. If you could hire an army of these Micro Minions, what would you choose to do with them?
Science Elite Club is made up of a group of people who love exploring science and enjoy helping others to learn science. We are willing to discuss our ideas and share our experiences. We also actively create learning resources and promote the importance of learning science. Because we believe in the power of collaboration, we are a learning community aspiring to excellence.
Most of the students in the Science Elite Club have completed basic high school biology, physics, and chemistry studies while they are in junior high school. We want to help open their minds, discover their interests, and provide information for them to choose majors and careers in the future. Microbiology is a very hot topic and it has a wide range of applications. The introduction of microbes in high school biology courses is very limited. Therefore, we hope to provide a ten-week introductory course in microbiology to students who have completed the basic science courses. It is suitable for students who are interested in biology and want to develop in the field of biotechnology in the future.
Define microorganisms, describe their properties, and understand the basic classifications of microorganisms.
Analyze the important role of microbes in the natural environment, including how they help to cycle materials.
Understand the harm microbes can do and learn about some specific examples of the negative use of microbes by humans throughout history.
Understand the help microbes can bring and learn about some specific examples of the positive use of microbes by humans throughout history.
Research the role microbial biotechnology can play in areas including food processing, biofuels, plastic degradation, environmental regulation, and more.
How does the microcosm affect the macrocosm?
How do human choices affect the fate of the world?
Week 1-Classification of microbes
Week 2-Microbial growth and metabolism
Week 3-Interaction between microbe and host
Week 4-Negative affect: can you make me sick?
Week 5-Negative use: are you stealing my food?
Week 6-Negative use: are you a weapon?
Week 7-Positive use: can you make me well?
Week 8-Positive use: can you power my car?
Week 9-Positive use: can you eat plastic?
Week 10-Positive use: can you change a planet?
Questionnaires were used to examine students' knowledge and understanding of microbiology, for example, their sizes, uses, where can we find them, and our relationship with them. Each week we will have a wordlist on Quizlet and a pre-quiz using Quizizz to go through terminology and determine misconceptions.
Have students show their mastery of the current week's topic and demonstrate this knowledge by analyzing data presented, sharing their notes, and Mastery Quiz.
Each student will choose one micro-minion and create a digital resume for the microorganism to apply for a job in the microbial company for global domination. The micro-minion who gets hired receives a scholarship for the next course.
