Being a JMU Engineering student, you can join this project/capstone during your junior fall semester and compete with a team during your senior year. Throughout your junior semesters, you can to prepare and learn applied principles that go into rocket design and engage and practice deployment on models. If you want a challenge, you can gain High-Power Rocketry certification with the the Valley Aerospace Team (VAST) located in Monterey, VA.
If you are interested in rocketry and are a JMU student, feel free to join the Madison Aerospace Club (MAC).
We launch with the Valley Aerospace Team (VAST) located in Monterey, VA. They host monthly launches throughout the year and are a chartered organization of both the National Association of Rocketry (NAR) and Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA).
All members of the team typically put in between 10 - 20 hours outside of classwork a week into this project. This is dependent on the schedule for the week and what we aim to accomplish. It is challenging, but the end goal of launching the rocket makes it worth it.
No. Because of the layout of the project, all disciplines and areas of engineering are incorporated into the project. The main areas of focus are electrical, mechanical, systems, and aerospace.
If you are interested in having us talk about what we do, conduct a demonstration, or teach a STEM related concept, please feel free to reach out to our STEM Engagement lead, Grace Klein, at jmu.rocketry@gmail.com.
Our team aims to successfully design, build, and launch a scientific payload on a high-powered rocket in the 2023 NASA Student Launch Competition.
We have a goal to fundraise $10,000 by the 2023 competition. This will cover all of the competition expenses including, parts, manufacturing, STEM engagement, traveling and more.
Our sponsors help us thrive by allowing us to build, test, and launch more successful and ambitious rockets. Our team is a group of passionate and driven students who want to get plenty of hands-on experience that will prepare us to enter the workforce and become the next generation of innovators and explorers. Sponsors of the JMU Student Launch team will gain visibility throughout James Madison University, our local community, and nationally at competition in Huntsville, Al.
