My Story with Comics in 2023

Joseph Moore | July 20, 2023

This year is the first year of my life that I have been actively following and picking up comics week-to-week. This started because I finally got some pocket change, and James Gunn's focus on specifically mentioning books and runs that will inspire his new DCU. I started the year by looking for older collected volumes of key storylines with an occasional single issue that I wanted to try out.

Then in early 2023, DC began its Dawn of DC initiative relaunching titles with new creative teams and fresh jumping on points. I have been following Dawn of DC to the best of my ability. I pick titles that have characters I am interested in or will be headlined by a creative team that excites me. So far I have been actively following, Superman, Superboy: Man of Tomorrow, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Titans, Nightwing, Cyborg, and Hawkgirl as well as a few other titles. By and large, I have been loving these fresh jumping-on points and love following these stories week to week.

On the Marvel side of things, I additionally have been looking for a fresh jumping on point. There were a few titles that were doing relaunches or had relatively easy jumping on points. Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Blade, Black Panther, and Ultimate Invasion have relaunched this year so I jumped in at the start there. I jumped in on the ongoing run of Amazing Spider-Man and Captain America and have been enjoying myself on that side as well.

On the indie side, I have yet to jump head-first in there. The only title I have picked up is Void Rivals by Robert Kirkman (Invincible, The Walking Dead), the new starting point for the shared G.I. Joe/Transformers shared universe.

I have been greatly enjoying my time with the medium this year in its many forms. Going forward I'm going to start writing reviews/blogs about my new pickups, so folks can follow along if they want, or employers can see I know what I'm talking about.
