Individuals may need speech assistive tools due to a wide range of speech impediments. These can range from something as simple as pen-and-paper to an Augmented Alternative Communication (AAC) device. These can be as elaborate as the speech-generating device used by the scientist Stephen Hawking or as basic as a tablet with some images and text that can be used to have a conversation with others.
Cboard.io is a great (and free) online tool to try out and edit an AAC. Take a moment to try out this technology and reflect on these tools below!
Cboard is an AAC web app for children and adults with speech and language impairments, aiding communication with symbols and text-to-speech. Click on the image to try and/or create your own AAC and see how it can work to help communicate with those around you.
Check out the video about the evolution of AAC with Dan and Brad as they look at some lower and higher tech AAC technology. It's a great overview of some of the technologies available including an eye tracker which has really changed the game for some users who use AAC devices for communication and have mobility disabilities!

2) How can we use technologies like the AAC you created to benefit other communities as well?
