There is a wide range of tools that can assist those that may need them in order to better interact with the physical and digital world around them. Having a better understanding of these tools and how they can be used can help you in approaching the design of a physical or digital space, allowing you to create a more accessible environment that is more inclusive and welcoming. Often times when we design these spaces with accessibility in mind it can benefit a variety of individuals, not just those with disabilities. Making many of the assistive technologies more commonly used can have the added benefit of helping to break down any possible the stigma of their use.
On this site we will discuss a small sample of the many assistive tools to make the digital and physical realms more accessible. There will also be activities designed to help those who may not have a disability to better understand their use. Challenge yourself with the activities and then use the questions provided on each page to reflect on the assistive tools for each section.
