In 2015, I kickstarted my research and conservation career with a stint as a data analyst at Rimba for a tiger conservation project in Malaysia. From 2016 to 2018, I undertook a Masters degree at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, studying the land snails on limestone hills. I honed my skills in biological taxonomy as well as fieldwork and project planning during this time. My research expertise also allowed me a chance to join Fauna and Flora International to develop a biodiversity management plan for a limestone quarry. This experience provided me a nuanced perspective on the dynamics between resource extraction and biodiversity conservation, and opened my interest in applied research.
From 2018 to 2019, I mapped the limestone karst ecosystems across Malaysia as part of a national conservation project by Universiti Malaysia Sabah. This work provided me valuable in-depth understanding of the opportunities and challenges that this biodiverse region face on the ground, from the most urbanised karst to the remotest corners of national parks.
From 2020 to 2022, I joined the Australian Museum to study the impacts of the 2019-2020 mega bushfires on land snails across south-eastern Australia. From 2022 to 2023, I worked with Invertebrates Australia to expand the bushfire impact assessments to all invertebrates. These two work experiences opened me to many opportunities to collaborate with researchers in ecological and systematics research on land snails as well as other invertebrates. Our collaborative work with natural resource managers also gave me insights into biodiversity policy and practice in Australia.
