PERFORMANCE

songs of absence  Anna Konjetzky

“Songs” and “absence”, the two main words in the title, are the content and program of this work. From a feminist perspective, “Absence” looks for the things that are missing, that are not visible, that disappear in the gaps, that want to be said or not, and questions whether absences are ‘just’ a not-wanting/not being able to see.

”Songs” refers to a formal examination, with the traditional form and album structure of songs, as well as with contemporary performance structures per se. It’s about the composition, the physical, tonal, spatial composition of an evening that works like a polyphonic parkour: polyphonic – multiphonic, an autonomy and independence of the voices.
The result is a songbook, an album, an archive that tries to make the absent visible, to give it a name, to create a homage to the forgotten, the repressed.

Spiel Im Spiel  Ceren Oran

When children play, anything is possible: the floor is made of lava, objects fly through the air and everyday objects take on a whole new meaning. The stool is a raft, a bridge, a house, a tower. It stands on its head, lies on its side, stands on its feet... From an almost infinite selection of possibilities, new worlds are playfully created with their own set of rules, which are constantly being changed, expanded and discarded.

But how does one game lead to the next? Who decides what happens next? Who makes the rules and how do you make the best decisions? And what happens if someone doesn't want to take part?

Three dancers get involved in the "Spiel Im Spiel". And also to tearing down the world they have just built and following new impulses. What was just a hat becomes a life-saving island in a stormy sea, where the floor was just untouchable, a large worm now crawls across the stage. What was just small becomes huge and flexes its muscles. Those who were just arguing are now dancing in unison. Play within play is a dance-based exploration of the potential space of children's play and an invitation to shape it.

MAGENTA HAZE  MILLA KOISTINEN

In the Magen audiences are invited to be in the space and observe the intrinsic choreography arising from the performers’ play with large brightly coloured objects. Created by visual artist Sandra E. Blatterer, the air-filled objects take on different shapes, meanings and associations as the performers explore their materiality, tactility and aural qualities. With Magenta Haze Koistinen continues her exploration of crowd behavior, the individual within the collective, communal joy and ecstasy. Inspired by the idea that ecstasy is a state where we are taken outside of ourselves and transcend to an ‘elsewhere’ place, Magenta Haze invites the spectator to observe a choreography of subtle tipping points between distance and closeness, togetherness and estrangement; fragility and strength; group and individual. Magenta Haze is a sister project of the solo Breathe, an outdoor performance in the summer 2021.

RELATIONSHIFTS  CEREN ORAN

4x4 meters - a box.

2 performers - one couple.

"Relationshifts" explores the different phases and dynamics of a relationship in a limited space through dance. From the romantic-enthusiastic beginning, to the shared space and the feeling of deep grounding and connectedness, to phases of longing for autonomy, the desire to break out of familiar paths, to leave obligations behind. Also included in the relationship package: betrayal, anger, longing, intimacy, compassion, sex, boredom, surrender and... love. "Relationshifts" takes all these big words that are part of our everyday life together as a couple and declines through the emotional and physical aspects of a relationship in different life situations. The starting point is very personal stories of the artistic team; which the performance translates into global images, using choreography and music as a language in which the audience can discover everyday moments.

The personal stories and relationship experiences of the artists flow into the rehearsal process. In addition, an endless field of research, in which Uyghur songs and Korean movies films  are consulted as well as the guide for polyamory "The Ethical Slut" (Dossie Easton, Janet Hardy) or poetry by Kate Tempest. “Relationshifts" weaves all these different inputs together and translates them into the choreographic image of a relationship in which the audience can also discover its everyday moments.

"Relationshifts" takes place as a one-hour loop four times each evening. The audience is invited to watch one or more repetitions; in the same space, with the same choreographic structure, the protagonists start again. But are they the same? Do they follow the same paths? Do they repeat the same patterns?

Or do they change, age, lose control, give up and start again.

BABEL   DJANGO BATES, CEREN ORAN

At the core of the production "Babel" is the question of physical limitations. In the specific case, this production is intended to address deaf people.

The music Django Bates writes for this production has a strong focus on percussive, rhythmic music and on playing with dynamics and volume. Both composer and choreographer explore the entire keyboard of volume, expressivity and instrumentation in musical communication as well as in body and sign language.

In the production "Babel", the dividing lines between choreography and composition between listening and looking. The intuitive movements of the musicians become a physical staging, the choreographed movements of the dancers a communicative action. The interpreters are performers, dancers, musicians and body percussionists all in one. The audience begins to listen with their bodies, contemplating the music.

MY CAT IS A UNICORN GEORGES MAIKEL

The dance performance MY CAT IS A UNICORN, as poetic as it is wacky, tells the story of four people who, to different degrees, seek perfection in their daily lives. Some claim to have achieved it already, others are still striving to reach it. Will they attain their goals, and what happens when they do? For these characters, perfection cannot just be defined by the individual but also depends on how tolerant to difference a society might be.

WHO IS FRAU TROFFEA? CEREN ORAN

A Durational Dance Performance for Public Spaces

Inspired by Dancing Plague of Strasbourg, the choreographer and dancer Ceren Oran created this durational dance performance in public spaces. The Premiere took place during the DANCE Festival, 2019 for 10 days and 70 Hours.

The more personal the reason why people dance, the more power it has and the more it emotionally touches the ones watching. Personal emotionality expressed by dance is one of the basis for this durational dance performance in the public space. Performers will dance non-stop, the audience (bystanders or bypassers) will see solos, duets, movements by groups in different constellations as well as scenes involving the masses. The dramaturgy of the 11 days will have both different highlights and intense lows due to exhaustion.

The different dance motivations create the basis for individual patterns, choreographies and structures for Who is Frau Troffea?, which developes further on stage through repetition, exhaustion and transferring onto the other dancers. All the dancers involved in the process share common goals: to have a unique transformative experience, express their emotional and physical landscapes, as honest as possible, to interact with the public space, fascinate and touch the audience by the images they are creating and generate a curiosity for DANCE and its uniting power!
