CHOREOGRAPHY

HUABUN(화분)

HUABUN ("potted plant" in Korean) is a 40-minute performance that deals with the unfamiliarity of time and space. It establishes connections between people and plants and the constant encounter with a different environment. HUABUN explores a movement language inspired by plants that scan their surroundings with 20 senses. ZINADA transform their experience of relocation into a poetic performance.

"In any case, what Lee does here is nothing like anything we have ever seen before; alternating between highs and lows at lightning speed (...) The migrated "plant" seems to have arrived in an environment that it does not yet trust. You almost feel a little sadistic that you enjoy this dance-like homelessness so much." - Suddeutsche Zeitung 30.03.2023

"(...)Well done, because the 40-minute premiere, which Lee performs solo, develops in three short chapters much more poetically and atmospherically than the reference book "The Intelligence of Plants" by researcher Stefano Mancuso, on which the researched movement material is based, initially suggests. (...) which soon continue through the rest of her body, creating a time-lapse effect - as if we were witnessing a scene from David Attenborough's documentary "The Secret Life of Plants. 봄이오면(when the spring comes)

On April 16th, 2014, Ferry Sewol sank, and it caused hundreds of deaths and disappearances. On this ferry, there were about 300 high school students for a trip to Jeju island. Thus, there were many young victims of this accident. Collections of responsibilities and passive rescue made this disastrous accident even bigger. On November 11th, 2014, the search for missing people ended, and nine were still missing. While the Sewol accident was still unsolved, spring came again in 2015. Tactlessly, the spring was beautiful but it was painful.

When the Spring Comes is a piece that describes the spring’s pain that can not share its beauty with beautiful children anymore. It is also my voice to the government that could not support better search and rescue plans. Some people still ask for the truth about this accident, but the government leaves it as it is and doesn’t let the students commemorate the victims in their school. Even though spring is beautiful, every spring will be a pain for the parents who lost their child in 2014 spring.

When the Spring comes was performed twice in July 2015 at the U-dance festival and got invited for further choreographic competition in the festival, but for the political reasons, the festival wanted me to create a new piece about something other than this topic. Therefore, I refused not to continue to perform at U-dance festival.
