Beginning in September of 2018, I started my first clinical rotation at Mansfield Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation in Mansfield, Connecticut. Here, I was assigned 6 patients over the course of the semester, reading their charts and interacting with the patients. I was taught how to create care plans for each patient according to their individual needs. This semester I chose to focus on a patient who suffers from dysphagia and was on a ground diet.
My first rotation this semester was at the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain, CT under the preceptor Jillian Wanik.
The second clinical rotation I completed this semester was at Backus Hospital in Norwich, CT under the preceptor Catherine Schneider.
Throughout these rotations I learned to use the hospitals electronic medical records (Epic) to review patient medical information. I also learned to give nutrition focused physical findings examination to patients to assess their nutritional status. I gained more exposure to various conditions and diseases by assessing these patients. Throughout both rotations, I continued to learn how to provide a tube feed for patients as well as TPN.
Spring semester I focused on a patient who was admitted for congestive heart failure and was on a cardiac diet.
This rotation was 3 weeks long and completed at Backus Hospital in Norwich, CT under the preceptor Catherine Schneider.
The patient I focused on patient who was admitted with ETOH abuse/acute on chronic Wernicke Encephalopathy.
The spring 2020 clinical rotation was completed remotely. Each week I was assigned multiple case studies to analyze and complete an ADIME for per case study. This experience allowed me to hone in on patient needs, and gave me the skills to methodically examine patient needs just through a snapshot of a chart. Although, COVID-19 did prevent me from experiencing Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford Springs, CT, I believe that this rotation online allowed for other soft skills to develop, including working from home and developing better time management.
