The classroom is an amazing place where discoveries are made every day however with the mountains in my backyard and so many adventures waiting for us, I can't help but take the learning on a road trip now and then. We try to inspire a passion for learning no matter where the learning takes place.
During the Spring, Summer, and Fall months, we use our mountain resources to inspire learning by teaching kids wilderness skills. I have spent 8 years showing students how to check for tracks, knowing how to use the wilderness to help them, and showing them how to guide the waters in a kayak.
Reading, writing, and arithmetic make some kids feel sick! However, establishing a love for learning is critical. Sometimes, it takes extreme measures to show kids that their hard work is worth it. Each summer I would extend a summer reading challenge for anyone who would accept it. At the end of each summer, we would tally the reading and I would pay my dues. So far I have slept on our school roof, been pied in the face, and duck-taped to our gymnasium wall. As much work and time goes into getting kids to read, these random fun tactics show kids that their teachers will do anything to get them into a good book.
