During my practicum at Kellits Primary, a well developed school focused on teacher personal growth and student support, I had the privilege of working with students facing various challenges. Under the guidance of my supervisor, Mrs. Sybil Bonnick, I participated in diverse activities aimed at promoting student well-being and academic success.
Student Support
I worked closely with students to overcome obstacles such as academic struggles, social difficulties and emotional challenges. Guided by my supervising Counsellor, I wrote up referrals and completed forms used for student files. I also assisted with interviewing students who were referred by their teachers. Through daily interactions with students, I was able to maintain consistent relationships with students, even those who were not on the counselling file. I would see conflicts and speak to students affected, helping them to solve problems and build better relationships with their peers.
Through individual and group counseling sessions, I helped students develop coping strategies and resilience. I recognize that once students realize there is a genuine care and interest in them, they tend to do better in general.
School Activities
Kellits Primary is a highly active school, always involved in co-curricular activities and extra-curricular activities. The Counselling department planned and organized many of these activities which benefitted both the school and community. I actively participated in school events, including Parent-teacher conferences, Father's Day activities, Student workshops, Teacher training sessions, Peace Day, World Aids Day and many others.
These activities allowed me to build relationships with students, parents, and staff, fostering a supportive school community.
Supervisor Evaluation
My supervisor, Mrs. Sybil Bonnick, demonstrated exceptional leadership skills. She welcomed me into her space and worked with me, giving me responsibilities and guided me into the world of school counselling. Her organizational skills are exceptional as she records everything and files all documents. She seeks to plan for activities in a timely manner and gives the teachers adequate notice before events. All communication is passed on via a letter, which is hand delivered to all teachers and a signature is required to show that they received it. This is to ensure that all members of staff are informed and prepared to participate in the upcoming activity. A flyer for events would also be done, as well as announcements in devotions.
Mrs. Bonnick maintains a positive relationship with members of staff, parents and students. She serves willingly and goes above and beyond to ensure students needs are met. She is a recognized authority, but remains humble. I would often seek her advice and directions concerning matters in the school, and she is ready to guide me accordingly. Her dedication to the school's curriculum and commitment to student growth were inspiring.
School Overview
Kellits Primary prioritizes teacher development and student support, offering a range of activities to promote personal growth. Despite facing challenges, students showed resilience and a willingness to learn. The school is lead by strong, God-fearing leaders who give a hundred percent in all they do. I would highly recommend Kellits Primary as a school for any developing counsellor.
