Introduction:
A 6-year-old Grade 1 male student exhibited persistent anger and aggressive behavior, causing concerns for his academic and social development. As his teacher, I worked closely with him, his parents, and the school counselor to address these challenges.
Strategies Used:
1. Parent-Teacher Collaboration: I discussed with his father at regular intervals the student's behavior, progress, and home dynamics, offering suggestions for us to partner together to help the child.
2. Individualized Support: I had daily one-on-one sessions with the student to discuss behavior, set goals, and encourage positive change.
3. Positive Reinforcement: Recognizing and rewarding good behavior, such as helping others and using good language, I publicly acknowledged his efforts, which motivated him to continue doing well.
4. Empathy and Validation: I started showing understanding and acknowledgment of the student's feelings and challenges, instead of constantly reprimanding him. This helped him to see that i genuinely cared about his well being.
5. Consistency and Boundaries: I allowed him to know that his choices will affect him by establishing clear expectations and consequences for behavior. He would be punished for bad behavior.
6. Referral to Counseling: Though I managed his behavior, I collaborated with the school counsellor for additional support and guidance in handling the case properly.
Outcomes:
- Reduced aggression and anger outbursts
- Improved behavior and relationships with peers and adults
- Increased helpfulness and willingness to assist others
- Enhanced academic performance
- Stronger teacher-student bond, with the student expressing appreciation and affection
Reflection:
This case highlights the importance of a comprehensive approach, involving parents, teachers, and counsellors, to support students with complex needs. By addressing home challenges, providing individualized support, and fostering a positive classroom environment, we can help students develop better coping mechanisms and improve their overall well-being.
Introduction:
A 5-year-old's sudden loss of a caregiver led to his mother's overwhelming grief, suicidal thoughts, and feelings of hopelessness. As her spiritual support, I worked with her to address these challenges. She walked into church one Sunday, saying she heard the sound and decided to come to church, eventually coming to the altar for prayer. I prayed with her and as the Holy Spirit led me, spoke into her life. After church, she shared her gratitude and challenges, then i offered to continue praying fo her. The following week, she came to church and gave me a note expressing her desire to take her own life. From there, continued to talk with her through this difficult period of her life.
Strategies Used:
1. Active Listening: I providing a non-judgmental, empathetic space for her to express emotions and concerns. She shared openly and held nothing back as she was comfortable speaking to me.
3. Emotional Validation: Acknowledging her feelings, and helping her process grief and emotions, I affirmed that it is ok to feel the way she does, and that God will elevate her from that period in her life.
4. Practical Assistance: Offering help with job searching, and connecting her with resources for daily needs, I provided suggestions for her to start moving forward on her own.
5. Ongoing Encouragement: Regular phone calls, motivation, and support during difficult moments helped her stand on her feet again. She also surrendered her life to Christ and walk by faith.
6. Empowerment: I constantly encouraged her to take care of herself, be patient, and trust in God to come through for her. I would send songs and texts of motivation for her to know she is not alone.
Outcomes:
- Reduction in suicidal thoughts and feelings of hopelessness
- Increased sense of purpose and meaning
- Improved emotional well-being and self-care
- Successful job placement and financial stability
- Enhanced trust in the power of God and spiritual growth
