Self-Presentation

I think my self-presentation helps me to position myself socially by my appearance and behavior. I would like to think I portray my image by choosing to be calm and less exuberant. I don’t like to be flashy with bright colors, high fashion shoes and lots of art across my body or even on my clothing. I think the more reserved the better. My wardrobe is a mixture of my favorite colors which happen to be gray, white, and black. I wear these colors so I can appear to be calm and reserved. My behavior is quite different from my appearance and is based on who I am with and at what time I am with them. I can sometimes appear to be withdrawn when I first approach my peers, especially when there are people, I do not know who are present.

I would describe my behavior as fluctuating depending on who I speak to, whether that be my friends and or family. For example, when I’m with friends whom I am more familiar with I am more outspoken, energetic and impulsive. The change in dynamics of the relationship between my friends vs. my family are the required normality's between each group. A prime example with my family is that I have a nickname that I would respond to, for them my name is Jay but for my friends, in which I don't have a nickname for, I would only be known as Jermaine. .When I am with family or acquaintances, I am more reserved, calmer and do all I can to be respectful of them. To describe my appearance, I try to correlate with the type of tone (such as my posture, the volume of my voice, etc.) to allow a more relaxed and quiet essence so peers that I do not know would expect me to be able to converse and relate on topics discussed. Evidence of my appearance is noted in my introduction assignment.

In conclusion, I think the rhetorical effects of the choices and actions associated with my appearance and behavior is contradictory at best, because in one hand I want to be reserved and not as outspoken with the people I am not as comfortable with. However, on the other hand I want to be outgoing and ecstatic. I am deliberately portraying different modes, such as my behavior and appearance, with certain audiences, to deliver the most optimal personality I can with each audience.
