Dumbbell Catcher
Introduction:
The motivation of said project is to avoid injury while doing any dumbbell exercise on bench. The expected users of the project will be anyone who has used the gym and anyone that plans to use the gym. The requirements of the project is that it can support weights of all kinds all the way up to 170 pounds.
Objectives:
The objective of the dumbell catcher project is to protect all users from injury with a dumbbell bench or any dumbbell related exercise. A highly critical part of the design process is that it can support weight. Using the wrong material or the wrong amount of the correct material can lead to failure in this project. so with this an account everything must be as specific and correct as possible.
Design Strategy:
The design strategy around the whole process is a box that can support weight. The design will be very similar to a hyper cube, however with a slightly different length on each part. There will also be a foam square of some sort in the cup and part of the hyper cube on the side that the dumbbell will be caught in. Something that could be a repercussion while making the project is that maybe the material that is being used may not be able to support as much weight as intended. There can also not be too much foam otherwise, there will be the risk of the dumbell falling in and bouncing back out of the contraption. The biggest safety concern is sharper edges, so, if possible, after the design process, it can be grind it down to a more rounded angle.

Testing Procedures:
This must have strong welds and be able to withstand up to 170 pounds without breaking a weld or bending in any way. It also needs to have a coating of some sort so that when the weight is dropped into it, it doesn’t make a lot of noise. The dumbbell catcher would be placed near the workout area, and be able to support the weight of the dumbbell being dropped.
Tolerance Analysis:
This chart shows the weights of steel per square foot depending on the thickness. For this project, the tolerance analysis should be minimal. In order for the panels to fit together correctly they should be +- ⅛ inch. When they are welded there should be a little room for adjustment.
Cost and Schedule
Cost Analysis:
Before the cost can be calculated, a thickness of steel needs to be decided. The foam to go in the center needs to be an extremely dense foam without a lot of bounce.
