Hanh received 2 yrs extension of her Academia Sinica Postdoctoral Fellowship! - SEP/2025
Our lab postdoc, Hanh, got some great news to share. She got two more years of support for her research with us from the postdoctoral fellowship from Academia Sinica. This fellowship will support her as an independent researcher by providing salary for her until the end of June/2027. Congratulations and yeah!!!
JP gave a presentation @ the Field Museum - JUL/2025
JP presented our published works about the evolutionary and conservation genetics of stag beetles in Taiwan at the Field Museum this summer (Watson Armour III Seminar Series). His presentation can be found in the following. If you are interested in our lab's research, check it out.
Zong-Yu won the presentation award @ICE2024 - SEP/2024
Zong-Yu presented his published work at the symposium "Biodiversity and Taxonomy of Lepidopteran Insects" during this year's International Congress of Entomology (ICE XXVII). His presentation won the Oral Presentation Awards for Young Scientists (PAYS). Congratulations to Zong-Yu and all the other winners! You can find Zong-Yu's published work here.
Max presented his summer project today. - JUN/2024
Max did a wonderful summer project here with us where he successfully assembled and annotated a chromosomal level genome of Dynastes reidii. He also compared the genome structural between different Hercules beetles! The results look pretty neat and we'll do our best to publish the results soon.
A badass looking new beetle species named Jen-Pan!
Our collaborator Martin's research team just published a phenomenal paper detailing the diversity of a ton of beetles from leaf litter in Taiwan. One of the new beetle species was named after JP, what an honor! Check out the research paper and an article talking about the findings.
JP is promoted to Associate Research Fellow with tenure! - JUL/2023
Woohoo!!!!!
Hanh is awarded the Academia Sinica Postdoctoral Fellowship! - JUN/2023
Our lab member, Hanh, has been awarded the prestigious postdoctoral fellowship from Academia Sinica. This fellowship will support her as an independent researcher by providing a salary for the next two years. Congratulations!
Dynastes beetle samples arrived from MEX again - FEB 2023
We received 12 more samples of Dynates maya and D. hyllus for our speciation/ecological genomics and phylo/biogeographic study. Thanks so much for the kindly help from our collaborator Oscar again. A great start of the year 2023.
New Dynastes beetle samples arrived from MEX! - APR 2022
Thanks to our colleague Victor, we have more Dynastes beetles for molecular systematics and genome sequencing. Hope that all the samples will generate great quality DNAs. They are such wonderful academic gifts to have received during this pandemic.
Wei-Zhe and Yao-De presented their work - SEP 2020
Beetle geometric morphometrics and co1 barcoding analysis!
MEX beetle samples arrived again! - JAN 2020
Thanks to Oscar, we have additional freshly collected Dynastes hyllus samples from the states of Michoacán, Guerrero, and Tamaulipas. It has been a great experience collaborating with Mex colleagues!
MEX beetle samples have arrived! - NOV 2019
Thanks to our collaborators from Mexico (special thanks to Victor), we have received our first set of fresh Dynastes hyllus beetle specimens from Oaxaca. Hopefully, more to come in the near future.
Lichen collection trip in the mountains - Nov 2019
We (JP & Yi-Hsiu) had a very successful collection trip with Thorsten and Matt in the mountains of Taiwan! A step forward to a nice illustration guide on beautiful and common lichens in natural trails of Taiwan, an initiation of inventory survey on lichen biodiversity, and a comparative community phylogeography study using lichens.
Yi-Zhen presented her work this summer - AUG 2019
A lot of data have been generated and some interesting preliminary results pointing to a promising future of the project!
Proposal funded! - May 2019
A proposal from the BEECHEN lab entitled "Species diversity and organismal diversification in the Hercules beetles/赫克力士兜蟲的種化及多樣性的研究" has been approved for funding by the Ministry Of Science and Technology (MOST 108-2621-B-001-001-MY3), Taiwan. The duration of the fund will be for three years (AUG 2019 to JUL 2022). The fund will cover for a field trip to obtain beetle samples, the cost of molecular work such as sequencing, and the salary of a full time research assistant!
Time to plan a field trip for next summer!
Collection trip in HsingChu - April 2019
Found many lichens, but not beetles. Still tons of fun!
Collections are starting to grow! - March 20 2019
Our friends interested in lichens brought in wonderful specimens from mountains of Taiwan!
