Because technology is dynamic, our understanding of the most effective and responsive means to connect with students must be as dynamic. Ongoing professional development, then, is a central component to effective online teaching.
Great teachers are always lifelong learners...this is one of my goals!
Although I have taught online classes for over a decade, there was not as much support around effective communication and course design in the past. I had, what I felt like were "good" classes, and I communicated well with students without any formal training or professional development for online education. I regularly attend the Southern California Economic Forecast hosted by California State University, Long Beach to stay up to date about economic trends.
I began to taking @ONE courses in Fall 2015, mainly for professional development units to move up the salary schedule. I soon became addicted to them and wanted to transform my classes. I have completed all classes required for the Online Teaching Principles Capstone, as well as the ones for the Course Design Fundamentals Capstone. In fact, I have taken every @One course offered! I suggest them to all of my colleagues.
I am currently very active on campus and in state programs related to OER due to my position as the OER/ZTC Co-Chair. I have attended the Online Teaching Conference for several years now, as well as the OpenEd conference.
I am completing both capstones for my online teaching certificates and now is the time to integrate all of my newfound ideas into my courses. Thankfully, I only teach two courses - Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. I plan to use all of @ONE courses as a new lens to revise my courses, as well as develop a new online course (International Political Economy) that traditionally has only been offered on-campus.
I plan to stay involved with many college-wide committees (Student Success, Guided Pathways, Online Education, and OER/ZTC). In addition, I am planning to attend the Online Education Conference in June and the Economic Forecast in April.
