In this section of my website, I will explain eight tools that can be used in a classroom, followed by a few examples of how they could be used.
Google Slides is an application created by Google that can be a very useful tool when it comes to teaching. A very common way to present lessons to students, is through series of slides, and Google Slides makes it very easy to do that. Google Slides is a very easy tool that any teacher can get used to. When first opening up a Google Slide, it provides you with a very easy to follow template, but it also gives teachers room for creativity. Using Google Slides can be very beneficial because it allows teachers to go through a whole lesson with just one application. Through the app, you can also link various different websites that provide additional help. Google Slides is also very beneficial for the students. They can also have access to these presentations, and if they do need that additional help, they can get to it through the presentation.
Having perfect attendance is just as hard for teachers as it is for students. Teachers also have emergencies or need a sick day, but those days can also get very tricky, especially when there is a lesson that needs to be taught that day. Luckily, Screencast-o-matic is an easy way to still relay information to your students, even if you are not there. Screencast-o-matic gives you a free and a paid option. The free option is about the same, it just allows a max of 30 minute videos. These videos can be uploaded to YouTube, and a substitute teacher, would have no problem finding these videos. These recordings can be of one's self, the screen, or both. This application really allows for teacher breaks. Of course, if a student has questions, they will not have answers on the spot, but they at least have still been given the opportunity to learn their lesson regardless of the teacher being there or not.
iMovie is great way to create short informational videos for topics that you maybe cannot find videos for. You could record slides and talk about them, or you could simply record yourself. Not only could you teach lessons and edit them through iMovie, but you could also use iMovie to explain projects that you might want your students to do.
Nearpod is a really good tool to keep students engaged while in class. Nearpod is an interactive tool that can be used during a lesson that can allow you, as a teacher, monitor how your students are progressing throughout a lesson. This tool, allows for you to put small activities throughout your lesson, such as quizzes, matching activities, polls, activites, and so much more. This app can be used in the classroom, but also through zoom. Overall, this tool is very useful in the classroom. It gives insight on how your students are progressing, and it also lets you see if you need to spend some extra time in a certain area. It helps teachers keep their students on track, and it allows them to keep their students not fall behind.
Teaching does not always have to come directly from the teacher. There are also various other lessons that have been created already, that are a great way to relay new information to students. Videos are a great way to give students a break for the teacher, and see how someone else teaches the lesson. With EdPuzzle, teachers can assign interactive videos for students to watch and complete. With this tool, teachers are given the option to voice over a video, insert question throughout videos, and cut the video to the teachers liking. This not only ensures that students stay engaged, but it also allows teachers to see which students are still struggling, and if there are areas where all students might need some extra help.
iSpring Free is a great tool for students to learn new topics, or to see how they are progressing in the lesson. iSpring Free is a free tool that makes PowerPoints more interactive for students. It gives the creator the option to insert quizzes throughout the slides, to be able to see your students progress. It also gives you the option to insert videos or links throughout the presentation. This is a great tool because you can always give out presentation slides out as homework, and it gives them small little prompts throughout to ensure they are actually going through the slides. It can also be used as activities that students can use if the teacher one day cannot make it to class.
Keeping younger students engage can be very tricky. There always needs to be some sort of fun activity involved. When learning is fun, students are more engaged and ready to learn. Starfall is a great tool for improving students literacy skills. On the website, students can learn something as simple, but crucial, like the alphabet; and they can even learn to ready through the website. It not only has reading activities, but it also has activities that include math and even science, This website gives students another way to experience learning. It gives them another teacher to teach them, and it allows them to do it on their own time. The website is created to look like they are playing games, meaning students will have a fun time learning as well.
Zoom is a very good way to keep connected with students when they cannot be at school for long periods of time. Teachers are able to have a video call and still teach what they are needing to teach, all while still being at home. This makes it much easier for students to not fall behind on their work, and it also allows for them to still have concat with their teacher. The younger students are, the harder it is for them to communicate with their teachers outside of school. If they have zoom though, they can still communicate their issues face to face. Not only that, but they can use some of the tools listed above all while being on a zoom call.
