Turning Point - Alternative Program

Jefferson County Schools provides alternative learning opportunities for students who require a different environment than the traditional school setting. Turning Point is designed for students in grades 5 through 12 who need additional individual support in an alternative setting. These students may be identified as at-risk, have a significant number of credits to recover for graduation eligibility (dropout prevention), require a transitional period between treatment centers or suspensions and regular school, or have struggled to succeed academically in a traditional setting.

Turning Point's Dropout and Credit Recovery Program offers academic support and career counseling services to eligible students in grades 7-12, typically between the ages of 13 and 17. This program serves students who have struggled in traditional school environments and may have had involvement with juvenile authorities or experienced long-term suspensions.

Transition to Traditional Setting:

For some students in alternative schools, the primary goal is to successfully transition back to a traditional school environment. This process is guided by a structured framework that begins with transition planning upon the student's entry into the alternative school and continues with ongoing monitoring of their progress once they return to the traditional setting. This approach fosters collaboration between educators, students, and parents to support the student’s success.

When a student is ready to transition, the Alternative School Administrator will submit a re-entry request to the Student Support Team to assess the student's eligibility. If the student is deemed eligible, a Student Support/Transition Plan will be initiated to ensure a smooth and supported re-entry process.

Create Student Transition Plan - The purpose of the meeting is to develop a student specific plan to support the student’s ability to be successful, addressing issues related to academic, behavioral, social, emotional, and mental health needs.
