Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a way that districts and schools organize and provide education to ensure that students receive the instruction they need to be successful. When districts and schools are organized as an MTSS, educators use a data-based problem-solving process to inform multiple tiers of standards-aligned instruction and intervention designed to increase the academic, behavioral, emotional, and life skills of students (essentially combining the previously separate PBIS and RTI processes).
Within an MTSS, educators carefully monitor student progress and provide more targeted or individualized support when needed.
The implementation of an effective MTSS program eliminates the “wait to fail” situation that prevents at-risk students from receiving intervention sooner versus later. MTSS also provides supports for teachers with instructionally relevant, easily understood information which allows teachers to know what works now to improve student’s skills. And, MTSS encourages better collaboration between teachers and families.
Using early warning indicators to identify students’ strengths and challenges, AND providing appropriate support based on their needs, we can help:
Sustain academic improvement
Increase in on-time graduation
Decrease expulsion, behavioral referrals, and suspension rates
Decrease inappropriate special education referrals and placement rates
Reduce student grade retention
Because the road to success is always under construction.
Elementary Reading Intervention:
Florida requires 90 minutes of daily reading instruction that is standards-based and includes whole group and differentiated instruction aligned with the Science of Reading. In addition to the primary (Tier 1) instruction:
Students displaying a reading deficiency based on screening, diagnostic, statewide assessments, formative assessment data, or teacher observations are to receive daily targeted supplemental (Tier 2) intervention.
Students with significant reading deficiency will receive daily targeted supplemental (Tier 2) AND intensive (Tier 3) intervention.
mandated by Florida Statute 1008.25
Secondary Reading Intervention:
Per Florida Statute 1008.25, every student in Florida is required to participate in a statewide, standardized assessment program and a coordinated screening and progress monitoring system.
If a student scores below Level 3 on the standardized English Language Arts assessment, their performance will be reviewed to determine the specific nature of their difficulty. Then, areas of academic need will be identified, and strategies will be implemented to provide academic support to improve their performance.
