The learning process of Communication in Negotiation from Week 1 to Week 14 was so well structured and well-planned. This made my learning process for this subject much easier. In each week of class I had learned a lot of things more about negotiation. They way madam taught us was not seem as she was teaching it for the first time. Face to face class would have been more fun and interesting for this subject.
Even in online classes we had fun and enjoyed some of the class activity like role plays for negotiation style and the role play for process of bargaining. Those type of class activity really made me to enjoy the class and have fun as well as let me to understand more deeper on those topics. There is a saying that "what we learn with pleasure we never forget" as per that the things that I learned in negotiation I can never forget. Especially in a negotiating process we must try to have win-win situation with our opposite party, if not things what we want to get also might not be getting for both the party due to our attitude.
Sometimes the breakout session, would not be the fun due to the groupmates that we get, some of them are fun and show interest in, some group they wont even respond when we talk also. At first few weeks of the breakout session went very well, I learned lot of things and worked together with my group members. But after few weeks it seems only the same person have to do the work and was not quite effective. From this break out session what I learned was "the capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is skill; the willingness to learn is choice" , so who are willing to learn they respond and give their inputs as well as their opinion, the people who are not willing to do it its their choice.
In my learning process of Communication in Negotiation , I learned that I have to face people in working world like the people who are almost similar like my classmates some will have the same way of thinking and doing job as my way and some would not have. I have to adjust and adapt myself to work with them. The knowledge that I had about negotiation before learning it was very little, after attending all the 14 weeks of Communication In Negotiation class, now I have a wider knowledge about it.
From Week 1 -Week 7 , in Communication in Negotiation class I had learned about the fundamental of negotiation like what is negotiation? Negotiation is a process of bargaining where two parties, trying to reach an agreement on mutually accepted terms to acquire each others wants. Then why do we negotiate ? To reach a agreement, to make a point to compromise . There are two types of negotiation which are distributive (win, lose) negotiation and integrative (win, win) negotiation. Place, Time, Attitude and subjective factors are the factors that affects negotiation. I also had learned on fundamental techniques in handling people, ways to make people like us. Besides that the negotiation class also had taught me how to be a better leader and taught me that trust is very important in negotiation. A good negotiator should be assertive, be firm and decisive must ready to say if have to, believe in yourself and show interest with people around you. There are certain principles that should be followed for a successful negotiation allowing creative flexibility, prepare, know the value and many more . The negotiation is a complex and continuous process it has 4 phases to complete it. The first phase was preparation. In the preparatory stage negotiators' should find their their hot buttons, WAP (walk away position), BATNA (best alternative negotiated agreement) , WATNA ( worst alternative negotiated agreement ), ZOPA ( Zone of Possible Agreement) and work on it.
From Week 8-Week 14, which was after the mid-semester break we continued with the phase 2 of the negotiation process which is exchanging information. In this process both the parties should exchange the information for better understanding. After exchanging of the information done phase 3 will start where they have to bargain and get things the parties wants. As far from my learning process in negotiation having win-win situation by collaborating is the one of the successful negotiation. In this type of situation where both the parties benefited a good relationship can be maintained. The last phase of negotiation process is commitment and closing . To end a negotiation process commitment is needed so that the objective of the negation can be achieved. A good negotiator should give 100% of the commitment. The learning process in Negotiation class had made to connect it to my daily lifestyle. Where usually I negotiate with my brother to separate to do the household works he says that I argue a lot with him, literally I negotiate with him by dividing our jobs where at morning or afternoon he have to the cleaning works as I will be attending classes that time, and during night I will be doing those house works. We are negotiating daily in our life without realizing it, but after learning about it I tried to connect with and practicing myself to be a good negotiator.
