There was an old man on whose nose,
Most birds of the air could repose,
But they all flew away
At the closing of the day,
Which relieved the old man and his nose.
- EDWARD LEAR
We began this module by reading short lemericks from the poems by Edward Lear, who was an artist and poet from the 18th century,
We were all given a specific lemerick which we then decoded in the form of drawings. This poem was about an Old man's where birds came to rest in his nose
We explore different forms of the nose, and how to show the motion of the birds. In our first iteration the form of the nose was overshadowed by the intense motion of the birds. The second iteration had a very elongated and an explicit form for the nose. We then tried to co operate the motion of the birds and the form of the nose and blend them together rather than having them look like separate pieces.
ART INSTALLATION
We had to create a structure using a net, based on what we had understood of the limerick and the drawings made by us. We wanted to capture the essence of the drawing and show it in the structure. Space and volumes were created in the structure by: folding the net at some places, pinching it, hanging it from several points, lowered it at some points. To eventually make an inhabitable space. Through this module we learnt how the material behaves when subjected to different conditions and also how to portray a piece of writing as a drawing.
