Here are some interesting Q&As from our Earth Week Kahoot 2021!
Q: What percentage of plastic actually gets recycled in the US?
A: 92%
Q: What is organic waste?
A: food scraps and yard waste. Basically anything that was once a plant.
Q: How long does it take plastic to decompose?
A: Technically plastic never decomposes, it just breaks down into smaller and smaller micro bits.
Q: How many grams of plastic do you eat per week?
A: The equivalent of a credit card.
Q: How many trees does it take to make one ton of paper towels?
A: 17
Q: What is greater, the water inside a plastic water bottle or water it takes the to make the bottle?
A: The water it takes to make the water bottle.
Q: Should you put plastic bags in your blue bin?
A: No! Plastic bags should only be dropped at specific bag recycling locations (Target, Sprouts, etc.). Plastic bags get caught in the recycling machinery and often break it.
Q; How many times can glass get recycled before it breaks down?
A: An infinite number! Glass can be endlessly recycled.
Q: Can tetra packs (soup and milk cartons) be recycled in Burbank?
A: No. Cartons can contain up to 8 layers of a mix of plastic and cardboard. Burbank does not have the ability to separate all these layers and recycle them.
Q: T or F: 90% of a product’s efficiency is determined in the design stage.
A: True! It is better to design an eco-friendly product than to try to make a wasteful product eco-friendly.
Q: After the petroleum industry, what industry is the largest contributor to global carbon?
A: The Textile Industry.
Q: What is a “closed loop” system?
A: A system of production where there is no waste, and all parts of the process are connected together.
Q: What global-warming gas is released by organic material trapped in a landfill?
A: Methane.
Q: What kind of tree make is cut down to make “plush” toilet paper?
A: Old growth
T or F: tin Foil can not be recycled.
A: False! Tin Foil can be recycled!
T or F: If my trash has a recycle symbol on it, I should put it in my blue bin.
A: No! Burbank only accepts glass, cardboard, paper, metal and plastics #’s 1, 2 and 5. Everything else should be left out.
Q: What are the three “R’s” of recycling?
A: Reduce, reuse, recycle. But we also want to suggest these great R’s: refuse, regift, rot.
Q: which of the following materials are made of plastic:
A: polyester, rayon, nylon, microfiber, fleece (all of these!)
Q: Methane is how many times more potent at warming the Earth than carbon emissions?
A: 28x
Q: Sitting in my car while it’s running does not have a negative impact on the environment.
A: False. “Idling” causes millions of pounds of air pollutants to be released into the air needlessly.

We throw away 7.2 million tons of food every year, and more than half of it’s perfectly edible. Meanwhile, 1 in 7 people across the world don't have enough to eat. So try to be cautious about what you throw away.
Every day, American households waste 150,000 tons of food. Some ways to prevent/lower food waste in households are frequently checking expiration dates on your food and freezing food before their expiration dates so that they last a little longer.

If every American family planted one tree, global carbon dioxide emissions would be reduced by one billion pounds each year.
The fast fashion industry is responsible for more than 8 percent of all carbon emissions. The average American will throw away more than 81 pounds of textiles a year. Some ways to lower these statistics are adjusting to slow fashion, second-hand, environmentally conscious brands, and recycling.

Instead of using parchment paper to bake and cook, swap to a much more eco-friendly option: a reusable silicone mat. Much more cost effective and environmental, these silicone mats make for the perfect baking tool.
Sea levels are rising at a rate of 0.14 inches per year. Melting glaciers and water volume expansion due to global warming have contributed to the rising sea levels.
Recycling a single 500 milliliter aluminum can saves enough energy to power a TV for over 4 hours!
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, "Containers and packaging make up a major portion of municipal solid waste (MSW), amounting to 82.2 million tons of generation in 2018 (28.1 percent of total generation)" (epa.gov).
