3D printing is a super cool and cheap way to make models!

What is 3D printing

A 3D printer is a device that creates three-dimensional objects. Like the printer in your home, it "prints" a object you have made. However, instead of printing the output on paper, a 3D printer builds a three-dimensional model out plastic or resin. 3D printers have the ability to create anything imaginable as long as it fits on the build plate.

But how does this relate to model trains?

It relates to it in every way! Scale modelers can have any thing they need printed for them. Is there a prototype that you can't find anywhere? 3D printing can help you have that model without the need for scratch building!

Cool! But I'm afraid of the cost. Is it expensive?

No! 3D printers have gotten surprisingly cheap these past few years. As technology advances, the price to make the printers lowers. You can get a good 3D printer for around $300. That's the price of a DCC sound locomotive! The price of filament (that's the plastic stuff the printer melts) is around $25 a kilogram. Trust me, a kilogram of filament will last you a long time.

Ok! But I see there are two types of printers. Whats the difference?

There are two types of printers in the 3D printing world, FDM and resin. FDM is your standard 3D printer that melts plastic with a heated nozzle. These are the most common types of printers. The second is a resin printer. Resin printers are the newest types of printers. they use UV light to harden resin. These printers print the most detailed models. However, there are some drawbacks. The resin that the printer uses is toxic and you will have to where gloves when handling the machine. When your print is done, you must clean the parts in alcohol and have a UV ray on the print to let it harden but other than that resin printers are awesome!.

Where do I get models to print?

You can get models from websites like: Thingiverese, Cults3D, and myminifactory. Note that some of these websites charge for models. Shapeways is another option however, Shapeways prints the models for you and you will have to pay for the model. Sometimes getting models printed for you can get expensive. Also note that many library's and schools have 3D printers. Library's sometime will let you use the printer for free!
