'Guided Learning' is a module offered by Temasek Polytechnic which allows students to study their chosen area of inquiry through self-directed learning.
Students will plan their individual learning project, refine and execute their learning plan, as well as monitor and reflect on their learning progress across a period of one academic semester.
I will discover and watch silent films from the early stages of cinema, mainly from two art movements - French Impressionism and German Expressionism. Through a series of write-ups, I will conduct research on their history and analyse the styles and skills displayed in the films, as well as recognise their significance.
1. Discover some of the earliest short films and write about their influence on cinema.
Films: A Trip to the Moon | The Great Train Robbery
2. Discover, analyse, and write about feature films from the Silent Era, and from two major cinematic movements - French Impressionism and German Expressionism.
Films: The Fall of the House of Usher | The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari | Cœur fidèle | Warning Shadows
3. Identify the similarities and differences between French Impressionism and German Expressionism through writing a comparative analysis, and be more culturally literate in recognising and engaging with films in a more meaningful and informed way.
