"This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God." (:18)
"So Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of His own accord, but only what He sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all that He Himself is doing. And greater works than these will He show Him, so that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He will..." (:19-21)
"...the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about Me that the Father has sent Me. And the Father who sent me has Himself borne witness about Me..." (:36-37)
"...You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about Me..." (:39)
Jesus feeds the five thousand (:1-15). "When the people saw the sign that He had done, they said, 'This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!'"
[Later] "So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus... Jesus answered them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on Him God the Father has set His seal.' Then they said to Him, 'What must we do, to be doing the works of God?' Jesus answered them, 'This is the work of God, that you believe in Him who He has sent..." (:24-29)
The crowds ask for a sign, like the one given to their fathers who ate the manna in the wilderness. Jesus declares Himself to be the bread of life. It is He who has come down from heaven "and gives life to the world" (:33).
"I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." (:49-51)
"Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill Me?" The crowd answered, "You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?" (:19-20)
... Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, "Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? And here He is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to Him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where He comes from..." (:25-26)
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'" No this He said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This is really the Prophet." Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" So there was a division among the people over Him. (:40-43)
"Who is seeking to kill You?" ... "Is not this the man whom they seek to kill?" ... "we know where this man comes from" ... "when the Christ appears, no one will know where He comes from" ... "Is the Christ to come from Galilee?" ... "Has not the Scripture said that the Christ... comes from Bethlehem... ?"
The people don't know anything. They are divided. They are foolish. Jesus stays the course. He is not concerned with this division. "If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority" (:17)
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (:12)
See again chapter 1 - "In the beginning was the Word... All things were made through Him... In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through Him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world." (:1-9)
Jesus is the Light of the world.
So the Pharisees said to Him, "You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true."
Jesus answered... "In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. I am the one who bears witness about Myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me" They said to Him therefore, "Where is your Father?" (:13, 17-19)
In this chapter, Jesus explicitly declares His relationship with God the Father. And the Jews are ready to kill Him for it (:59).
Jesus answered, "You know neither Me nor My Father. If you knew Me, you would know My Father also... You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world..." (:19,23)
So they said to Him, "Who are you?"
Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been telling you from the beginning... He who sent Me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from Him." They did not understand that He had been speaking to them about the Father...
"...I do nothing on My own authority, but speak just as the Father has taught Me. And He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him." (:25-29)
The Jews said to Him... "Who do you make yourself out to be?"
Jesus answered... "It is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say 'He is our God'... Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see My day. He saw it and was glad." So the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?" Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am." (:53-58)
Jesus restores the sight of a man born blind. A dispute breaks out between the man and the Pharisees.
The man answered, "Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where He comes from, and yet He opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, God listens to him. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God, He could do nothing." (:30-34)
The Pharisees cast the man out of the synagogue.
Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him He said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" He answered, "And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?" Jesus said to him, "You have seen Him, and it is He who is speaking to you." He said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped Him. (:35-38)
So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep... I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture..." (:7,9)
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."
"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep... I know My own and My own know Me, just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from the Father."
Jesus is the only way. There is one door, one shepherd, one flock.
"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. I and the Father are one... the Father is in me and I am in the Father." (:27-30, 38)
Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead.
"This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it." (:4)
Then Jesus told them [the disciples] plainly, "Lazarus has died, and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe..." (:14-15)
Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days... Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you." Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believed in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" She said to him, "Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world." (:17,21-27)
Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb... "Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me." When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out." The man who had died came out... Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go." (:38,40-44)
It is the week of Passover. Jesus knows that His arrest and crucifixion are immanent, for so He speaks.
Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair... Jesus said, "Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me." (:3,7)
...many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" (:11-13)
This moment of praise is short-lived. Jesus knows His hour has come. He knows that this is His purpose (:27). The crowd that hales Him this moment, will crucify Him the next. They remain in unbelief.
"The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
"Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven: "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." (:23-28)
"... And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die... When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. Through he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him... (:32-33,36-37)
Jesus washes the disciples feet.
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet... I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, 'He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.' I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he." (:12-14,18-19)
When he [Judas] had gone out, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once." (:31-32)
"Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me..." (:1)
Jesus speaks to His disciples as His crucifixion approaches. He is going away. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one and together in Jesus' work of redemption, and His disciples are one with Him.
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him."
Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves." (:6-11)
"In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who love me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him... If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.
These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you." (:20-26)
"And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does date place you may believe. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here." (:29-31)
Jesus is still speaking to His disciples. This section is known as the Farewell Discourse (13:31-16:33).
"I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit... By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has love me, so I have loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be full." (:1-2,8-11)
"If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you... Whoever hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father." (:18,23-24)
"But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning." (:26-27)
"I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you...
He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you." (:4-7,14-15)
"A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me...
Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you." (:16,20-22)
"I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father....
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart, I have overcome the world." (:28,33)
"Father, the hour has come..."
Jesus prays that He and the Father would be glorified in His crucifixion, and that His disciples and all those who would believe their message would be kept, sanctified and united as one.
"I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed." (:4-5)
"All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one." (:10-11)
"I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me." (:20-21)
Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested. He is put on trial before Annas, Caiaphas and Pilate.
Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, "Whom to you seek?" They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am." (:4-5)
[Peter strikes the servant, Malchus in defense.] So Jesus says to Peter, "Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?" (:11)
"Are you the King of the Jews?"... Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not of this world." Then Pilate said to him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world - to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice." Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" (:33,36-38)
Jesus is crucified.
"We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God." (:7)
Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, "Behold your King!" They cried out, "Away with him, away with him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar." So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. (:14-16)
He who saw it has borne witness - his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth - that you also may believe. (:35)
Jesus rises from the dead and appears to His followers.
Mary Magdalene reports that the tomb is empty. Peter and John run to the tomb to see for themselves.
Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first [John], also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes. (:8-10)
But Mary stays at the tomb. Then Jesus appears to her.
Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord" - and that he had said these things to her. (:17-18)
He then appears to the disciples and then to Thomas.
The he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." (:27-29)
Jesus appears to the disciples again. He restores Peter.
Jesus said to them, "Children, do you have any fish?" They answered him, "No." He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" (:5-7)
John, "the disciple whom Jesus loved", closes his account.
This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true. Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. (:24-25)
