This was a group project from a Game Design UCI course.
Also was the first narrative game I've ever worked on!
Due to limited resources during COVID we were tasked to create a visual novel using renpy, and through an activity within the first few days, we selected the following to theme our game:
Occult Mystery, Great Expectations,
A small Pacific Island, Modern Day
The adventure we came up with ended up becoming a cast of characters who were all lured into a mysterious island. Our main character Dott Dazs, shown above, leads this cast of characters (rather recklessly) in an effort to find who is behind all this and put an end to it once and for all.
Thought up of the main plot device of the visual novel.
Drew all the Character Art Sprites.
Wrote all of the third chapter of the story (Radio Silence).
Thought up of the characterization for Scarecrow (one of the characters).
Postmortem
This game ended up not having much going for it in terms of gameplay and player agency. For the most part, the player didn't feel like they were in control of the story since there were only several endings to the game, and the path you took to get them there were relatively the same.
However, due to the lack of direct communication and our team's lack of knowledge for game development during the time, it's no surprise that the game was going to lack in some way. But at the very least it was super fun to help with the narrative of the game.
I've always thought that picturing certain narrative scenarios like a movie scene in your mind is an invaluable skill to have for narrative game design, and it proved to be just as useful for this project.
