The following is a list of the different ad-hoc committees on which I have served while at Florida Southern College.
Revising Elementary Statistics (2020 - 2021)
During the 2020-2021 academic year, I volunteered to be on a departmental ad-hoc committee charged with reviewing the Elementary Statistics course, and whether it satisfied the needs of other departments. I met several times with my chair and others to discuss the audience of Elementary Statistics and the departments on campus that comprise the largest proportion of that audience. It turned out those departments were psychology and education. After discussions with those department chairs, we decided to implement SPSS software in all sections of Elementary Statistics. I worked with my colleagues to coordinate a curriculum for Elementary Statistics that involved the use of the SPSS statistical software. I also created labs to accompany each chapter of the text and to be completed in class that require use of the software.
Reviewing the Traditional Math Major (2020 - 2021)
During the 2020-2021 academic year, I volunteered to be on a department committee charged with reviewing the traditional mathematics major. As part of that ad-hoc committee, we aimed to describe the current population of student majors and which courses might serve them the best. We ended up discussing courses we wish we could offer rather than courses that we should actually offer. Unfortunately, not much has changed as a result of this ad-hoc committee.
Designing a New Applied Math Major (2019 - 2020)
As mentioned in the "Committee Work" section, I worked with the other faculty in the math department to design a new applied math major. I volunteered to update the generic syllabi and course projections for the new major. I also participated in departmental assessment. I did some of these tasks as part of an ad-hoc committee.

Pre-Professional Program at Florida Southern College (Spring 2019)
In this program, students participate in specific activities that encourage ongoing exploration of the health care field and prepare them for success in this highly competitive arena. Activities include workshops, classes, one-on-one advising, and professional observation and volunteer experiences. Students completing the program are well prepared to submit a holistically competitive application to outstanding professional programs.
In spring 2019, I was asked by one of my former students, Beth Pierce, to serve as part of her observation committee as part of the Pre-Professional Program at Florida Southern. Beth was previously in both my Elementary Statistics and Calculus 1 courses and had earned an A in each of them. The committee met with Beth, held a mock-interview, and provided Beth feedback after the interview. The committee then put together a letter of recommendation for Beth to include in her application materials.
Adjusting Course Projections (Fall 2019)
The math department at Florida Southern is always adjusting its course projections. This is due in part of the creation of some new courses as well as a changing student audience, whose demand alters some of the courses we should offer. In fall 2019, I volunteered to be part of an ad-hoc committee, along with my colleagues Roxanne Back and David Valdivia, to review and adjust our departmental course projections.
