Project Brief
Company: Worker Studio
Client: University of Colorado Hereditary Cancer Clinic
Initiative: Educational Science Communication | Animated Video
Role: Producer, Writer, Composer, Performance Capture Animator
A 4-minute animated short designed to demystify genetic counseling and hereditary cancer testing for a general audience. Developed in close collaboration with the University of Colorado Hereditary Cancer Clinic and the Colorado Cancer Genetic Program, the film is narrated by “Gene,” a charming character-guide who welcomes viewers into the vast, metaphorical “library” of the human genome.
As Producer, Writer, Composer, and Performance Capture Animator, I helped shape the project from concept through final delivery, crafting the story and score while also pioneering real-time animation workflows to bring our character-driven science communication to life.
How do you explain complex genomic science in a way that’s emotionally resonant, medically accurate, and visually compelling, all within 4 minutes? Our team was tasked with creating a versatile educational asset that could live inside clinics, classrooms, and public outreach campaigns, achieving both credibility with subject matter experts and connection with diverse audiences.
Story Development & Scriptwriting
Crafted the narrative concept and final script, shaping "Gene" as a warm, empathetic narrator who guides viewers through abstract scientific content with clarity and heart. Worked closely with genetic counselors to ensure scientific rigor while avoiding overly technical exposition.
Performance Capture & Animation Integration
Performed real-time facial animation for the character “Gene” using Adobe’s Character Animator software, as part of an innovative pipeline featured by Adobe for its novel use of motion capture in medical storytelling. Helped bridge the technical and creative layers between performance, timing, and post-production.
Production & Cross-Team Coordination
Oversaw production timelines, deliverables, and team flow—balancing a hybrid 2D/3D animation pipeline across distributed artists. Collaborated directly with the director, lead animator, and a range of animation specialists, ensuring consistent style and scientific alignment.
Score Composition & Sound Design Direction
Composed the original score to support pacing, tone, and thematic cohesion. Worked with the director and animators to ensure musical cues complemented visual transitions and emotional beats.
Medical SME Engagement
Served as primary liaison with medical and genetic experts, translating their input into actionable creative decisions across story, visuals, and terminology. Helped preserve medical nuance while ensuring clarity for patients and non-specialist audiences.
