As the owner, I, Janet Spires, live on the premises. At one time, I had two care homes, and it did not work. I prefer to live with my residents. "We are family" my residents and me. Before becoming an owner and operator of a board and care home, I became a registered nurse.
As an RN, I worked many years in nursing homes or convalescent homes and also hospitals where I rendered care for the acutely ill.
However, my license as a board and care home operator in the state of California does not permit me to provide nursing in this setting. Most of the requirements to meet the needs of the elderly do not require nursing. Most needs can be provided in the surrounding of an extended family similar to the one the elderly person is familiar with.
In this setting, we can provide care until the end of life at all levels, including especially hospice. Approximately two months ago, one of my residents passed away with his loved one at his bedside and our familiar caregivers with him.
We offer different levels of care from those who are able to walk independently to those who are wheelchair bound to those who are bed bound. Our goal, together with the residents' families, significant other(s) etc., is to provide the best possible care we can offer.
The grounds surrounding the care home are fenced in offering added security and safety. We also have a monitored fire alarm system with sprinklers throught the facility.
If the preference of your parents) (we have had a few couples), family member, relatives or significant other(s) etc. is a setting with fewer people with similar needs as their own, please consider my community-based extended family home where every staff member knows your name. "Home is a thing we make together," a quote from Portia Elan, author of Homebound.
