Employment history:
I joined the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) as a full-time research economist immediately after completing my MSc in 1990. While at the IFS I directed the research into consumption and savings (1992-1999), completed a part-time PhD and also served as the Deputy Director of the Institute from 1997 to 2002. In 2002 I moved to the Economics department at UCL where I was Professor of Economics while continuing my association with the IFS as Deputy Research Director. I moved to the University of Manchester in 2010 and remained as Deputy Research Director of the IFS until 2017. From 2011 to 2024 I also served as a Trustee of the Nuffield Foundation.
