JALT BizCom SIG

What is the BizCom SIG?

The mission of the JALT Business Communication Special Interest Group (SIG) is to promote advancements in business communication education, research, and practice.

The SIG will focus on all aspects of business communication, such as business composition and technical writing, information systems, international business communication, management communication, organizational and corporate communication, and so on.

The SIG members are professors, scholars, and professionals focused on or interested in language and communication issues in the world of business and organizations. The SIG brings together academics from various fields, including linguistics, communications, and management sciences, as well as consultants, trainers, and managers working in multilingual contexts as an interdisciplinary endeavor. It aims to strengthen the connections between research, education,

and the professional world in a way that informs management education in today’s academic institutions.

What events do we organize?

Since 2016 we have organized face to face conferences in Fukuoka, Osaka and Tokyo, with globally renowned plenary speakers, from Japan, Asia and Europe. We have also been involved in organizing online webinars with other Business English teaching groups around the world. Furthermore, we have also coordinated English for Specific Purposes events in Osaka and Tokyo.

What do we publish?

We publish a quality newsletter biannually which has included interviews with and articles specially written by many leading BizCom researchers such as BELF pioneer Anne Kankaanranta; Business corpus linguistics guru and ex-Tokyo University Professor Michael Handford; Hong Kong sociolinguist Winnie Cheng; business lingua franca Asian specialist Ryuko Kubota; Business Administration academic and specialist in human resource management Remy Magnier-Watanabe; and BizCom researcher and academic in Hong Kong Bertha Du Babcock. We have also produced two peer reviewed conference proceedings, supporting researchers to develop and publish their own writing.
