Construction Request

We design and manufacture instruments for researchers at JAIST. The service includes outsourced drawing, producing electronic circuits, developing software for instrumentation control, and constructing models using a 3D printer.

Application and consultation

We accept all requests and consultations through the Inquiry Form. After receiving your inquiry, we may conduct meetings as needed. Before submitting an inquiry via the Inquiry Form, please do not visit the Machineshop directly.

Before You Apply

Before submitting your request, please review the rules of our construction request service. When submitting your request, please provide a drawing if possible. Please use the JIS Mechanical Drawing Method for creating the drawing, rather than an original drawing method (You can acquire knowledge of the JIS Mechanical Drawing Method through our Technical Web Service). Even if there are errors in the drawing method, you do not need to worry about them.

We provide a PDF template of drawing paper containing objects required for mechanical drawing, such as frames and title blocks. Please make use of it when creating your drawing.

Construction Request Rules

*Introduction

We provide design and production services for your equipment. Our service includes outsourcing drawings, producing electronic circuits, and developing software for instrumentation control. When using this service, please follow the rules below.

*Application

First, please apply through the Inquiry Form. The staff member in charge will then contact you via email and arrange a meeting if necessary. Please use SolidWorks, the free computer-aided design (CAD) software available at JAIST, to create the drawings. For more information on how to create drawings, please refer to the Technical Web Service. If you have any further questions, please contact us using the Inquiry Form. Depending on the nature of the request, it may not be possible to accept it. Requests for parts that cannot be manufactured in the machine shop or for mass production will be outsourced. Please understand that this is not acceptable.

*Completion time and delivery of finished products

The basic completion time is two weeks after the materials are delivered to the workshop. If you need it sooner, please state the reason for your request in the application form. There is a possibility that we may not be able to finish on time for various reasons. In that case, the staff in charge will contact you. When notified of the completion of your request, please pick it up as soon as possible. If there is a delay in picking up the finished product, please inform us. Make sure that the product is in good condition when you pick it up. As a general rule, if there is a problem after the product has been picked up, you will be asked to submit a new work request.

*About costs

The user is responsible for the cost of materials, but it is also possible to use scrap material from the machine shop. It is recommended to check if there are any scrap materials available in the machine shop before ordering materials. We have a variety of materials in our stock area. If urgent delivery is required, materials from the machine shop can be used. In this case, we will charge you for replacement materials at a rate equivalent to the amount of materials used. We will provide you with a quote for the same price you used, and you can place your order accordingly. Please note that the material requested to be ordered may not be the same type of material used for the part. There is no charge for the work. If special tools are necessary for the fabrication of the part you have requested, we will purchase the tools and charge you for them. The purchased tools will be delivered with the finished part. However, if the tools are expected to be used frequently in the machine shop, they will be purchased at the expense of the machine shop and will become fixtures in the machine shop after they are used.

*Disclosure of Requests

On the crafting request form, we will confirm whether or not you can make your request public. When publishing, for each category, the following is shown below:

Name of the client –>Undisclosed

The title of the request and the finished photo –>Disclosure

Request details and drawings –>Undisclosed

If you requested to be kept private, we may discuss with you whether or not it can be made public, so that we can use them in the machine shop reports and presentations.

*Indemnity

We always operate machines with paying attention not to make a mistake. However, it is impossible to make the possibility of failure zero. Therefore, we might not avoid a delay in the deadline. As a general rule, the client is responsible for the costs caused by such delays.

*Other notes

If the material contains or adheres to harmful substances, please provide details in advance. If special treatment or disposal methods are required, the client must handle them. Any student, researcher, faculty, or staff member who belongs to JAIST can request help with construction requests. However, the approval of the faculty member of the laboratory is required to make a request.

The items to be filled out in the application form are as follows: Laboratory name, Your name and email address, Teacher’s name and email address, Requested Title, Preferred delivery date, Whether the content of the request can be made public or not, Details of the request.

There are two ways to hand over materials to be brought in: Hand-delivered directly to the staff member in charge. In this case, a date and time will need to be arranged. Submit to a table in the reception room. There is no need to arrange a date and time, and the items can be handed over in the absence of staff. However, you must be aware of the risk of theft. If the request is changed in the middle of a project, there may be a delay in delivery. The materials used for the jigs required for production will also be paid for by the laboratory.

*Please review the rules before submitting your construction request. *
