We are pleased to announce that we will be holding the 46th Research Conference of the Japanese Association of Art Education Society in Hirosaki, for the first time in five years. A state of emergency was first declared on April 7 in Japan, 2020 due to the Corona disaster. In a situation where one cannot help but feel a sense of stagnation and isolation, many people have been searching for a way forward in both research and practice.
The theme of this conference is "Opening Passages from the Classroom: Its Shape and Beyond".What images does this theme evoke for you? From within the confined space of the school, as the classroom opens up towards the outside, what exactly might be visible at the end of the path? There may be a sense that something is approaching from a distance. Of course, there is not a single answer to this question.
In addition to oral research presentations and research subcommittees, the Hirosaki convention program includes a symposium on the first day, International Bureau project planning, and the committee member projects 1 and 2 on the second day. To give a little advance notice of the contents, "Symposium: A New Teacher is Born Every Time" will feature Konoike Tomoko, a contemporary artist who is scheduled to have a solo exhibition at the Aomori Museum of Art next summer, and Okuwaki Takahiro, the curator in charge of that exhibition at the museum.
At the suggestion of the International Bureau, we are pleased to announce that prof. Glenn Coutts, President of the International Society for Art Education (InSEA), will be giving a lecture at this year's conference at the same venue as the symposium. The thema is "Art-based Humanity: Learning through Art with InSEA".
Furthermore, in the Committee's Plan ①, there will be a dialogue with Takamatsu Tomoyuki, who practices unique approaches that respect children without conforming to established frameworks and structures (Akehamako Language Classroom, Kamakura Art Studio), and Yashima Takayuki, an educational leader promoting subject instruction in his role as an education chief (Elementary School attached to Hirosaki University). In the Committee's Plan ②, building on the discussions from the 2022 Art Education Research Society Research Forum, there will be discussions on the curriculum and assessment of art education led by Uchida Yuko (Saitama University) and Wakamatsu Daisuke (Hirosaki University Graduate School).
At last, the majority of this committee members are based in the Kanto-Koshinetsu region(not only Aomori prefecture), and the Society operates under an unprecedented structure that transcends universities and regions. The conference is run by the Society's young researchers, connected online.
We look forward to seeing many of you at the Hirosaki Conference! Committee members
